Make your own alpha arbutin hyperpigmentation treatment

Niacinamide and alpha arbutin seem to be about the best choices for fading hyperpigmentation and evening out sun damaged skin tone. Your Best Face upped the amount of alpha arbutin in its reformulated Restore, but most of the time we simply don't know if we are getting meaningful amounts of actives in our potions - unless, that is, we make our own. I had a go with buriti oil (a new antioxidant find of mine) and threw in Matrixyl 3000 for good measure.

If you want to channel your inner formulator and fashion a freckle fader (we have banished the term age spots from Truth In Aging), then click on the images for the recipe (it takes a couple of minutes to whip up) and a little background on the ingredients. Note, I have been fiddling around with the recipe over the weekend and have modified the ingredients slightly - the main reason was I overdid the buriti in the version posted on Saturday and have now reduced it to a few drops. Easier still, use YBF Concentrate as your base.

The recipe is:
4 teaspoons of Your Best Face Antioxidants Concentrate or 4 teaspoons quality olive oil
1 teaspoon buriti oil
Half teaspoon alpha arbutin
Half teaspoon Matrixyl-3000
Half teaspoon niacinamide

There's more on the ingredients if you hover over the images below. You can buy ingredients from Lotioncrafters, Skin Actives and New Directions Aromatics

  • Did you have any trouble disolving the niacinamide and the arbutin in the oil? I never tried that because I thought they were only soluble in water.
I think another good adition would be N-acetyl Glucosamine. That, in combo with the niacinamide, is what is in the Olay Regenerist line.

Cristina - I found that dissolving the alpha arbutin in a teaspoon of water (mentioned in the recipe) was necessary.

  • Has anyone else had issues with this article, in terms of the text below the images? I am not consistently seeing the text/directions underneath each image, although sometimes the content appears below the closeup version of the image.

I prefer the method that was previously used, wherein all images/text appeared on one page.

  • Is anyone else experiencing erros with the gallery? I am having difficulty with the image gallery in terms of it consistently showing text for each image. This article is not the first time I have experienced these issues.

What happened to the old version of article display wherein all images and content were on one page?

I really want to try making this cream!

    Stephanie,
I have been testing the gallery all weekend - and I am connected to the internet by satellite right now, which is very slow - and everything is displaying fine for me. If anyone else is having problems let us know. Stephanie what browser are you using?

  • Marta,
I'm sorry for the double post last night. Re the issues, I'm using ie 7.0.5 and I d not see the text under the images nor the prompt to go to the next/return to the previous image. When I tried with Firefox 3.5 just now, (PC) it worked, although last night I had issues with the same.

Never the less, I am excited to try making the fading cream!

Thanks for all your hard work,
    Stephanie

Stephanie, I tested it with Firefox on a MAC and PC over the weekend and it worked fine. But if you continue to have problems email marta@truthinaging.com and we'll try to work it out.

  • Marta,
To clarify- the issue happens with IE, the site works fine with FF in both mac and pc.

It's still problematic in IE- as I used it to access the 5 best body buys and did not get text.

    I am using IE 7.5.

    Thanks,
    Stephanie

I'm very interested in trying this but I'm wondering what purpose the olive oil serves? If it's for spreadability or moisturizing, then any oil could be substituted? Or maybe pure squalane or glycerin? I'm not a DIYer, so pardon my ignorance.

Posted on August 28, 2009 at 11:39 am

  • marta says:

Jaysie, the olive oil is just something to mix it all with as using buriti oil alone created something that was too orange and hard to rub in. Olive oil penetrates human skin easily and it is antioxidant. But you are right - any oil would do.

Stephanie, using IE7 you can mouse over the images without clicking and see the full text. We are trying to resolve getting the gallery to function for your browser, but (like many things tech) it isn't a trivial issue. Thanks for your patience.

Marta, how effective was this? How long did this take to lighten the areas applied to? Have you tried Alpha Arbutin from both Lotioncrafter & Skin Actives, which one would you recommend?
    Thanks.

  • marta says:

Lolita, my alpha arbutin comes from Lotioncrafters. I'm not going to exaggerate. It does fade age spots after a couple of months but not completely. You could always play with the quantities and try more AA though.
