A few weeks ago, I wrote about Bliss newcomer, Dr Bragi Age Management, an Icelandic anti-wrinkle serum made from an enzyme that comes from codfish. After trying it out for a few weeks, I wasn’t thrilled with the results and said as much in my review. Now what often happens if I write a less than glowing review, is that sooner or later a comment is posted by someone from the product’s marketing department posing as a thrilled and delighted consumer who just can’t understand why I had such a different experience. Not so the Dr Bragi team, who took the time to right a thoughtful and informative response and then pledged to change my mind by sending me Dr B’s Intensive Treatment Mask ($20).

Burt’s Bees new Natural Acne Solutions Purifying Gel Cleanser ($9.99) joins a suite of zit zappers and demonstrates yet again that Burt’s Bees is making green affordable. In particular, acne treatments tend to be a cocktail of harsh chemicals, so Natural Acne Solutions is a refreshing change with a smorgasboard of ingredients that (mostly) are good enough to eat.

The active ingredient is salicylic acid, a common acne treatment. It works as a keratolytic by causing the cells of the epidermis to shed more readily, preventing pores from clogging up, and allowing room for new cell growth. More unusual in a cosmetic is antioxidant beetroot, although you will find it in one of our Five Best lip products by Be Fine.

castor-oil-cleanse1Cleansing with castor oil seems to garnering cult status, with websites devoted to it and message boards clogged with comments and questions. For the uninitiated, the idea is to mix one part castor oil with two parts olive, sunflower or other oil, spend an inordinate amount of time massaging into your face and then wipe off with a facecloth soaked in hot water. My rosacea is breaking out at the very idea and, anyway, I’ve always thought castor oil was a laxative. It suddenly struck me that castor oil cleansing is something Gywneth Paltrow might do. Wickedly, I searched on “castor oil cleanse gwyneth paltrow” and found that she swigs half a cup of the stuff to detox! Close enough, I say. qgvi6h5kfb

On my trip to Spain, I managed to take an excursion out to Rioja, the commanding wine region where Frank Gehry designed hotel Marques De Riscal is home to Conde Nast rated #1 Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa. Obviously, grapes are a major highlight in the brand, plucked from within the resort’s own vineyards. It would have been wrong to leave without a world-famous Gran Facial Caudalie, which includes the use of Caudalie Gentle Buffing Cream ($35), an exciting facial scrub that eliminates impurities, dead skin cells and stimulates cellular renewal.

The facial itself was divine (equally indulgent to the signature crushed cabarnet scrub, which uses actual grape seeds, grape seed oil, honey and brown sugar). Up to this point, I had never tried Caudalie Gentle Buffing Cream (or Caudalie in general) but I know the brand’s presence in the beauty industry exceeds expectations and they garner a large following with their range of products that utilizes vinotherapie.

Amazon’s top selling beauty products include a few surprises, seasonal preoccupations and demonstrates the power of the talk shows. We review what America is buying and give our take.

RapidLash ($48), the latest darling of the morning talk shows, has shot to the number one position of Amazon.com’s best-selling beauty products. The first thing to say about it is that it contains a prostaglandin analogue called isopropyl cloprostenate. Prostaglandins are glaucoma drugs that have the delightful side effect of making eyelashes grow. There are some not so desirable side effects too, such as blurred vision, irritation and even change of eye color. However, it also has a couple of peptides and our reader reviewers say that RapidLash works. Compare with Lilash.
