Adult acne seems so unfair. What’s the point in getting older if your skin ignores your wrinkles and starts behaving like a teenager. Even breakouts seem uncalled for. Adult acne is not only an embarrassing pain, it is hard to treat. Heavy guns such as retinol help (although it is likely to make your skin dry and sore, as can regular LED treatments (also good for healing pits and scars). But for daily prevention and rescue, I have been really impressed by Platinum Skin Care’s Oil & Blemish Control Gel ($28.95).

Damage control of a small outbreak on my chin (result, I think, of a 20-hour flight home from South Africa), was fast and effective. And it smells pretty good too.

The base is one of my all-time favorites, argan oil. Hailing from Morocco, argan oil is extremely high in linoleic acid, which is omega-6 and oleic, which is omega-9 fatty acid, and vitamin E. It is one of those oils that isn’t oily, if you know what I mean. Serenoa serrulata more commonly known as saw palmetto it is mostly made up of fatty acids. Other components include small quantities of polyphenols (long-chain alcohols) and polysaccharides and sesquiterpenes, which may be responsible for the plants’ antiseptic action.

Then there is sesamum indicum (sesame seed). The next time you contemplate the top of a burger bun, know that the sesame seeds sprinkled there are rich in vitamins E and B1, manganese and copper. An animal study concluded that sesame extract can inhibit the growth of tumors.

Platinum Skin Care says that all of this creates a perfectly balanced polyphenol formula, consisting mostly of lignans and phytosterols. These help inhibit the formation of 5-alpha-reductase, which is responsible for the overproduction of sebum: “This active decreases the severity of seborrheic dermatitis by up to 46% and normalizes the secretion of sebum.

Furthermore, there are so many good antioxidants in Oil & Blemish Control Gel that it is probably anti-aging as well as a zit zapper. For example, research from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) confirms that red clover extract contains four anti-tumor compounds, plus the antioxidant tocopherol, which is a form of Vitamin E.

  1. How does this product work on black heads? I’m using Derm-a-gel, which was actually the product that introduced me to this site, for three weeks now with great results but I’d be willing to try something different (and slightly cheaper) once my current bottle runs out.
