Glucose is a vital cellular fuel, but it can also can cause damage by randomly reacting with proteins and DNA. This process is called glycation and it can have negative consequences. Glycated enzymes often fail to work as well as they should or a glycated protein may lose its shape and become unstable. Scientists are beginning to more fully understand these processes and their contribution to aging and some cosmetic companies are honing in on glycation when formulating their antiaging potions and lotions.
Glycation leads to cross-linking, which is the formation of chemical bridges between proteins or other large molecules. A material that undergoes cross-linking usually becomes harder, less elastic and has a tendency to tear or crack. In the aging body, cross-linking contributes to hardened arteries, wrinkled skin and stiff joints. Read more...

Rid yourself of wrinkles with the wave of a wand? It must be magic. Actually, the FREO Cool Wand Therapy Skin Care System can be yours for only $79.95. Check it out on the Home Shopping Network. It is sold by a doctor so it must be authentic. Right?
Dr Jeanette Graf, MD (apparently famous for inventing Vita-Peptide) peddles a range of skincare products on HSN, but the wand is by far my favorite. Now, I take it that amongst us adults it would be superfluous of me to point out what the wand looks like.
The idea is that you slather the good doctor’s antiaging cream over your face during which time the wand has reached a temperature of 38 degrees. Rubbing the cold wand over your face is supposed to help the cream’s ingredients penetrate (including, presumably, all those lovely parabens). According to Dr Graf, there is a wealth of data on the anti-aging and healing effects of cold and my husband insists that Paul Newman’s sole concession to grooming was to plunge his face into cold water every morning. Unlike fine wine, cosmetics and other personal care products simply do not improve with age. T0 make things more difficult, these products are rarely printed with an expiration date, and most don’t display the same yucky signs that tell us when to toss a head of lettuce or a loaf of bread. However, the products you rely on for your beauty and personal care needs can lose effectiveness over time and can even become breeding grounds for dangerous bacteria. Check out our list below to find out when it’s tine to clean out the medicine cabinet or makeup bag.

Even if you think you have got your head around the differences between alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), not to mention the subsets thereof like glycolic acid, it can still be difficult to choose the right product and regime. Especially when one’s skin has a split personality. Most of us can relate to the member of the Truth In Aging community who wrote in and said: “I am 53 and have combination skin (which tends to be very oily in summer and rather dry in winter) and am STILL prone to break-outs”. Should she use AHAs or BHAs? Conceivably both, but I am running ahead of myself. Read more...

When Marta asked me if I’d road-test an at-home facial peel, Hydropeptide Polish & Plump Peel ($68), the first image that popped into my mind was that scene at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark when the Nazi’s face melts off in the presence of the original manu-stone of the 10 Commandments (it was either that, or the presence of Harrison Ford in his Fedora). Could that waxy demise be my fate? I wasn’t sure, but I said yes, as any good Beauty Adventurer would.
The first thing I learned is that when it comes to facial peels, you need to know about peptides, since these little babies (in this case, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide also called Matrixyl), stimulate the synthesis of collagen and hylauronic acid, which help relax wrinkles and plump skin. They’re also an important ingredient in almost any facial peel out there. Read more...
