Jan Marini Resurfacing Body Scrub and Self Tanner- reader reviewed
I reviewed the Resurfacing Body Scrub ($37) and Sunless Self Tanner ($28) from Jan Marini’s Bioglycolic line. They are products that I do recommend; however, I do not recommend the self-tanner to those who are new to self-tanning (more on that later).
This line from Jan Marini has a great concept behind it. It uses glycolic acid to improve the appearance of the skin. Jan Marini claims that by using glycolic acid, with other things, the products in this line can “correct skin conditions and improve the appearance of skin texture, lines, wrinkles, and discoloration.” The brand also claims that the glycolic acids will increase skin’s hydration and smooth the surface of the skin. I do like this concept. While using these products, I believe that my skin became smoother and softer. However, I do not believe that these products improved the discoloration of my skin. I have sun damage on my shoulders from a very bad sunburn that I got in the summer of 2011, and I saw no difference in the coloration of that area.
While it is a great concept, one thing that I did not like about both products was the scent of the scrub and lack of a fragrance in the self-tanner. Even though the scrub had a natural fragrance in it, it still carried a chemical smell. The self-tanner is unscented and had a very strong chemical smell, which lingered throughout the day.
I really liked the scrub. I used it before applying the self-tanner and also by itself. It left my skin feeling soft and smooth. It helped to moisturize my skin as well, including areas that were healing from mosquito bites. When using it before applying the self-tanner, it helped the tanner adhere better to my skin, and provided a nice color payout.
The self-tanner is a product that I liked, but it took me a while to like it. I have never really used self-tanner before, and using this product was a challenge. The lotion is white, and it is difficult to see where it is being applied on the skin. This makes it very easy to mess up and end up with blotches and streaks of color. It took me an entire month to finally get used to applying it properly, without any streaks. One thing that I extremely disliked was that the self-tanner would stain my nails orange. This took a very long time to come off, due to reapplication of the tanner.
What I did like about the self-tanner is how the color adjusts to your skin. It uses an amino acid that “interacts with the skin’s proteins, activating a beautiful, natural-appearing, long-lasting color change.” For me, the color that came out when it was applied correctly is a nice, light tan color. I did not appear “orange” unless it came out streaky. The bottle does say that the color should be set within one to two hours, but I believe that it is closer to four hours, with the color being noticeable after one to two hours.
Since the color is not immediately apparent, I did not like using the self-tanner on my face. The first time I used it on my face, it did come out streaky simply because I could not see where I was applying it, and the color developed well after I had left my house. It took me a few tries to become more comfortable with it, but there was always that one spot that happened to get streaky as the color set.
The Jan Marini Bioglycolic Resurfacing Body Scrub and Sunless Self Tanner are products that I do recommend to anyone who is looking for a great body scrub, and a self-tanner that gives great color!
