UPDATE (June 2013): Read our latest Five Best serums and creams with Matrixyl.

My feelings about retinol are much the same as they are for ethanol: I know it works, but there has to be a better way. That retinol is effective at eliminating wrinkles is indisputable (there are decades of research to back it up), its just that I don't like the way that it does it. Essentially, retinol's harsh exfoliation forces the skin to produce new cells. The trouble is that there is a limit to how often that can be done (as a matter of fact the limit goes by the name of Hayflick and it is 52 times) and retinol isn't doing anything to build, repair or fend off antioxidants. So what if, I suddenly thought, you added in some Matrixyl (a powerful antioxidant peptide) to a retinol cream?

Not too may potion makers seemed to have shared in my idea (they seem to fall into either the retinol or Matrixyl camp with never the twain meeting). After much research, I did come up with some and I have a handful here that, by and large, look really good.
