    Five Best lip plumpers

I am someone with more of a zip than a pout (and when I am annoyed, my mouth disappears completely). Lip plumpers and volumizers should be my best friend, but all too often they can be as uncomfortable and irritating as a bee sting or so fleeting that they barely last a kiss (the peck variety). Here are a few of the lip plumpers we’ve tried out that are just swell.

Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip Plumper ($24). I don’t want to put any nasty chemicals anywhere near my mouth where they could be ingested. Not only does this lip volumizer do no evil, it might actually do some good. It has avocado oil, a peptide, shea butter, green tea (a proven anti-oxidant), cranberry, vitamin C and E. It even has the powerful anti-aging antioxidant Matrixyl (palmitoyl oligopeptide). Mint and ginger are supposed to do the plumping job. It does create a tingling sensation, but not unpleasantly so and the pout lasts a few hours. The colors are nice too (I use NYC).

Skinn Lip 3X Volumizing Serum ($29.50). A huge favorite of Kate’s (read her full review) – she buys one for every woman she knows. It goes to work immediately to plump up lips (and the wrinkles on and directly around the lips), but I can see a cumulative effect after using it for more than a month. That is likely due to the addition of super peptide Matrixyl (MaxiLip), which is a strong collagen stimulating ingredient.  The Skinn Lip Serum tastes great (it contains peppermint oil and flavoring), stays put for a impressively long time, smooths on nicely and leaves lips moist, full and rose colored.

be-fine-lipBe Fine Lip Serum with Chamomile & Beets ($19.99). It feels great, looks great and works great. Lips will be fuller, sexier with a (very) lightly tinted gloss. The taste is natural vanilla. And the color: a an ultra sheer tint that comes from the natural beet root and orellana seed extracts. And then there is, of course, palmitoyl oligopeptide (Matrixyl), which stimulates the synthesis of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the deep layers of the skin while at the same time providing a modicum of UV protection. (Read the full review).

Fusion Beauty LipFusion Color Shine ($38). This comes reader recommended. Although there is immediate gratification with a subtle plumping, you are in for the long haul here as collagen is building out the lips over time. The secret sauce is atelocollagen, from fish. Ricinus communis seed oil is an odd thing to include as the seeds of the castor oil plant are toxic. I’m not keen on the parabens either.

City Lips Collagen Plumping Treatment – Advanced Formula ($24.99 – $35). No instant fixes here. But lips will start looking fuller in a couple of weeks. The key ingredients are collagen building Matrixyl and hyaluronic acid. There are several vitamins, olive oil and, unfortunately, parabens. One of several amino acids is dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline, a plant-derived ingredient that provides firming action to the skin. While there is not much independent information out there, I did find from one source this: Dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline (DPHP) is a combination of an amino acid (hydroxyproline) and a lipid (palmitic acid or alcohol). It seems to be one of the widely used new anti-aging ingredients, especially in lip plumping products.”

Based on this review, I’ve been using tSkinn Lip 3X for two months — and the results are impressive. A devoted Fusion fan no more. Skinn plumps my lips equally if not more than Fusion and for half the price, but plumping is the starting point for Skinn, not the end point. Matrixyl is a potent collagen stimulator, and the fine lines that threaten to develop around my lips are responding quite nicely. Great product, thanks TIA!
