Safety Measures/Side Effects:

The Cosmetics Database rates PPG 26 Buteth 26 as a low hazard to moderate hazard ingredient depending on usage. It notes concerns regarding organ system toxicity, and one or more animal studies have shown sense organ effects at very low doses; therefore, it should be used with caution around the eyes, mouth or lips. It also notes the potential for this ingredient to be an irritant, and studies on rabbits have shown skin irritation does occur at moderate doses.

However, the International Journal of Toxciology published a report in 2000 entitled "Final Report on the safety assessment of PPG-12-Buteth-16, PPG-9-Buteth-12, PPG-26-Buteth-26, and PPG-28-Buteth-35" and concluded that "Clinical testing of PPG-26-Buteth-26 produced no skin irritation or sensitization ... Based on the available data, PPG-26-Buteth-26 and PPG-28-Buteth-35 are considered safe as used in cosmetic products."

Other concerns regarding the use of PPG 26 Buteth 26 are the potential contaminants, 1,4 Dioxane and Butyl Alcohol. Butyl Alcohol (or n-butyl alcohol) can be a reproductive and developmental toxin; 1,4 Dioxane is a known carcinogenic. It was determined, however, that Butyl Alcohol was not found to be present in PPG 26 Buteth 26 (but may be in other PPG Buteths) and 1,4 Dioxane can be removed by purification (RealSelf.com).
