A cleanser — when formulated well — can be one of the most important elements in a skin care regimen. I consider it the first step in my routine, and so I like to look for those that have a special extra something that brings real added value. Medik8 White Balance Cleanse is a face wash that really punches above its category to earn its place as a very useful anti-ager.

White Balance Cleanse is formulated to brighten the skin with an interesting plant extract and gently yet effectively exfoliate. What’s more, it is a powder cleanser — a genre that I’ve always been fond of, but don’t see all that often. For clearer, brighter skin, I am finding White Balance Cleanse hard to beat. Plus pores are now so minimal as to be almost non-existent, even on my nose where they are genetically (thank you, maternal grandmother) prone to crater.

The most interesting ingredient is an oxyresveratrol (a form of the resveratrol antioxidant) that is found in mulberry or, in this case, artocarpus lakoocha (monkey jack tree). Research has shown that it can inhibit tyrosinase and prevent hyperpigmentation and even in very low doses (according to Medik8), it can reduce melanin production. In Medik8’s own tests, a 0.25 percent concentration produced a skin whitening effect after four weeks (compared to six weeks for kojic acid and 10 weeks for licorice extract).

White Balance Cleanse has a polyhydroxy acid called gluconolactone, which hydrates and prevents UV damage, as well as chelates oxidating metals and inhibits MMP enzymes in skin, which are responsible for all the things we are trying to prevent — from wrinkles and sagging to broken veins. With a higher molecule size than AHAs, gluconolactone is generally a good option for sensitive skin.

Although it comes as a powder, this cleanser mixes with a drop of water to become creamy. It is not at all one of those grainy (read gritty) exfoliating cleansers and it doesn’t contain microbeads. Yet exfoliate it does, with volcanic perlite and micro-fine particles from bamboo stem extract.

I was rather hoping that since this is not water-based, there would be less need for a full preservative system. However, there is sodium benzoate, which is not very friendly towards our cells’ mitochondria, and sodium metabisulfate, an irritant and carcinogen. However, I am too impressed with this cleanser to give it up.
