Is a Solution for:
Dull Skin

Dull skin tone is typically a result of poor circulation. Any triggers that deprive your skin of much-needed oxygen and nutrients will result in dull skin tone. Good blood circulation, on the other hand, boosts healthy cell turnover, brings oxygen to the skin and removes toxins.

Lack of exfoliation — the sloughing off of dead skin cells — will also cause dull skin. Dull skin is also often one of the first signs of aging, as skin renewal decreases about 7% every 10 years. Fortunately, there are many ways to brighten and re-texture your skin so that it should never know a dull moment.

Two Powerful Ingredients for Boosting Circulation: Sodium Hyaluronate and Niacinamide

Sodium hyaluronate is comprised of small molecules that penetrate the skin easily and can hold up to 1000 their own weight in water. When applied topically to the skin, it can reach deep down into the dermis to combine with, maintain and attract water. It also promotes blood microcirculation and nutrient absorption, and helps maintain normal metabolism. Sodium hyaluronate is front and center of Sciote Super Moist Hyaluronic Serum ($75 in the shop) with a whopping 50% of this circulation-boosting ingredient.

Niacinamide is vitamin B3. According to the British Journal of Dermatology in 2000, “topical application of niacinamide has been shown to increase ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin, prevent skin from losing water content, and stimulate microcirculation in the dermis". Niancinamide is in Ao Skincare's Fortify Day Cream ($89.95 in the shop).

Your Best Face Hydrate B Concentrate ($45 in the shop) has sodium hyaluronate and three forms of vitamin B, including niacinamide. Both sodium hyaluronate and niancinamide are in the skin brightening serum Medik8 White Balance Click ($80 in the shop).

Best Botanicals for Dull Skin: Horsetail and Gotu Kola

Horsetail (equisetum arvense) has high levels of silica, giving it a very smoothing, softening effect on skin, and it is known to heal wounds and improve circulation. It is in dull skin's enemy, BRAD Biophotonic Sublime Youth Creator Radiance Concentrate ($125 in the shop).

Gotu kola has long been used in traditional medicine. According to research done by The University of Maryland Medical Center, triterpenoids found in gotu kola strengthen the skin, boost antioxidants in wounds and increase blood supply to the area. Although primarily formulated with kojic and glycolic acid to tackle hyperpigmentation, Sciote Illume Brightening Serum ($95 in the shop) is a natural skin brightener with gotu kola and horsetail. Organic gotu kola is in ExPürtise Effective Anti-Aging Face Serum ($120 in the shop).

Exfoliation is key

The stratum corneum is responsible for the skin’s moisture retention and the build up of dead cells results in dryness and loss of radiance. As we age, the turnover rate of our cells slows down, but the good news is that exfoliation speeds it up. A great product for restoring radiance is Dr Dennis Gross Original Alpha Beta Peel ($88 in the shop) daily peels. It is a two-step system that deploys pre-moistened towelettes. Step one is the application of AHAs and BHAs, some green tea and chamomile. After two minutes a neutralizing and hydrating solution is applied with vitamins C and E, ubiquinone and retinol.

While I would caution against the temptation to use and abuse retinol in the hope of sloughing off dull skin (its effect can actually be drying), Medik8 Retinol 1TR Cream ($51 in the shop) has slow-release retinol with hydrating sodium hyaluronate. Retinal and a plant-derived equivalent called bakuchiol are featured in Ao Skincare's Rewind Retinol ($119.95 in the shop).

Rich and Nourishing Skin Care

On dull skin days, I have come to depend on products that work by nourishing rather than scrubbing or stripping. Benir Beauty BV Nine Platinum Anti-Aging Bee Venom Cream is a luxurious, peptide-based cream designed to effectively repair signs of aging, while stimulating the renewal process of skin cells.

You Can Always Rely on Vitamin C

Vitamin C works by inactivating free radicals inside the cell and between the cells (which can damage your skin's DNA), and by recycling vitamin E, to protect the lipid-soluble structures. Dr Dennis Gross C+ Collagen Deep Cream features 3-O vitamin C technology combined with a proprietary energy complex to recharge skin's cells while targeting damaged skin for accelerated improvement of a dry, tired, uneven complexion

Start with a Great Cleanser

Medik8 White Balance Cleanse is a brightening, powder-to-foam exfoliating cleanser. A gentle and effective daily exfoliating cleanser infused with patent pending Oxy-R (oxyresveratrol) helping to improve the appearance of pigmentation, uneven skin tone and blotchiness
