Dear Gisele

I applaud you for your stand on sunscreen. You said that sunscreen is “ poison” and that you try to choose ones that are “free of parabens, oxybenzone... and retinyl palmitate.” And you are right, chemical sunscreens degrade under sunlight and can destroy skin cells. New scientific evidence is unequivocal that retinyl palmitate becomes carcinogenic under sunlight.

The industry backlash against you is all too predictable and I understand that you felt the need to backtrack and use your own blog to calm the furore, writing: "I would like to clarify the misunderstanding about the use of sunblock. I do use sunblock but also I try my best not to be exposed to the sun when it is too strong.”

Sunscreen is our frenemy. We need it, as you say, to protect ourselves. But as savvy consumers, we know that sunscreens may also cause harm. We have a right to demand better from the sunscreen and cosmetic industry and I want to thank you for speaking out.

Sincerely,

Marta
