With its zesty smell and brightening ingredients, Arcona Mandarin Brightening Peel ($78/2oz) was the wake-up call my skin needed. It doesn’t cause the skin to actually peel, but it does exfoliate and regular weekly use for the past couple of months has faded freckles and softened coarse-looking skin. I would certainly add this to my arsenal of dark spot treatments.
A key ingredient in Arcona’s Mandarin Peel is Sepiwhite, and it is regarded as a breakthrough age spot fader. Listed here as undecylenoyl phenylalanine, it goes further than other hyperpigmentation treatments because it doesn’t just treat tyrosinase activity, but other stages of pigmentation as well. The manufacturer claims it is faster and more effective than arbutin, kojic acid or hydroquinone.
There is also the peptide nonapeptide 1, which is derived from melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH). This is a peptide hormone produced by the pituitary gland. When your body is exposed to sunlight, MSH is produced to stimulate production and release of melanin (melanogenesis) by melanocytes in skin and hair. Nonapeptide-1 is supposed to work in a similar way to Sepiwhite by blocking its action.
Boosting these dark spot treatments are the classic AHA exfoliators: glycolic acid, lactic acid and gluconic acid. They make this mask pretty intense, but I nevertheless found that Mandarin Brightening Peel was never too tingly for the sensitive skin on my face, but perfect for my neck.
I also like that the formula is rounded out with antioxidant red clover and tomato lipids and, as always with Arcona, there is nothing to dislike.
