Cons

Not for purists

I was selected test Baume 27 Bio-Energizing Cell Repair Balm ($180). My 64-year-old, somewhat stressed and dry skin was definitely in need of repair, and I was hoping this product would deliver. This product comes from a French company called M.E. Skin Lab that was founded by a pharmacist with a strong belief in natural products with the purpose of rebuilding and repairing damaged skin. Bio-Energizing Cell Repair Balm is an anti-aging and preventative treatment.

It is said to be very well suited for mature skin that is prone to dryness and dehydration, as well as for damaged skin. This balm is 83 percent natural and packed with good-for-you herbs and oils. The actives include an MA2 complex — consisting of asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid — peptides, arginine and vitamin E.

The ingredient I was most intrigued by was the MA2 complex that included asiaticoside, something I thought I was unfamiliar with. Turns out, it is actually a compound from Indian pennywort, an ancient herb that has been used to heal burns and wounds for thousands of years. Also, it should be noted that given the number of botanicals in this, I expected a heavy fragrance, but it was odorless and non-irritating.

The company website promotes a synergistic approach with their products — use them all in tandem in order to achieve optimal results. I often view this approach as upselling, but in this case, there may be some logic. Each product layers over the other to work in balance with the skin’s natural ability to heal itself and generate collagen. However, I used the balm by itself and can only imagine the results had I used the serum as well.

This is indeed a balm — it is very heavy and thick. But when you rub it between your fingers, it emulsifies into a consistency that is somewhere between an oil and a cream.  It absorbs beautifully and left my skin looking smooth and glowing on application. I found it a bit heavy for daytime use, and I think that going into summer it may be a bit too heavy period. However, my skin loved it during the cooler months.

As for the results, my skin tone is more even and the brown spots have faded considerably. The flush and red veins that often appear are gone. Fine lines are all but invisible. My skin has truly never looked better.

It comes housed in a heavy porcelain jar, and while it looks somewhat small, you only need a very small amount. I suspect this will last for quite sometime.  Bio-Energizing Cell Repair Balm is not an inexpensive product, but given the results and the fact that it seems to be the only product I need to use at night, I will in all likelihood purchase it again.

Will TIA be carrying any of these M.E. Skin Lab products?
