I’ve used several different natural deodorants before just giving up and going back to a commercial antiperspirant. I wasn’t happy about it, but I didn’t want to walk around smelly, either. Luckily, I was chosen to test Beach Organics Peppermint Deodorant ($11.99), and it works! The ingredient list is identical to that of most DIY deodorant recipes I’ve seen (I was actually going to try to make my own before getting the chance to test this): organic coconut oil, organic cornstarch, baking soda, organic beeswax, essential oils, vitamin E.
Coconut oil is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, as are the various essential oils used in the line (other available scents are lemon lavender, lemongrass, patchouli and rose geranium). I really like the peppermint smell; it’s fresh without being over-powering. The baking soda and cornstarch act to absorb odors. And the vitamin E is the preservative. The deodorant itself goes on easily without leaving residue behind to get on your clothes. As for how it works, it’s not an antiperspirant, so you’ll still sweat, obviously, and it’s not water proof, but so far it has kept me odor-free during a humid NYC summer, riding the packed sweaty subway and even during workouts. I am really very impressed.
Now, for what could be a down side: in my reading of DIY blogs and recipes, some people have noted that they are sensitive to or become sensitive to the baking soda in the recipe. Some people also claim that cornstarch attracts yeast. Personally, I have had no problems at all, but if you’re interested in trying it you should be aware of the possibility. The price may also be a consideration for some. At $11.99, it is pricey for a deodorant. I will definitely buy it myself, though. It works, and that’s important, and it has zero harmful ingredients. I could DIY but the coconut oil in DIY recipes tends to get runny. For me, convenience wins out.
I highly recommend this deodorant and am interested now in looking at other products in the line. I know it sounds silly to get excited over a deodorant, but I’m so glad I was chosen for this particular test!
