Three complimentary growth factors

High price tag

I – along with some other members of the Truth In Aging community – were early adopters of Bioffect when it first launched in the US from its homeland in Iceland. Bioffect is uniquely based on an EGF (epidermal growth factor) that is synthesized from barley. Somehow though it never really wowed me and over the years I moved to other serums with growth factors (typically human rather than plant-derived). Recently, I was sent Bioffect 30 Day Treatment and was very interested to see how it would stack up against my early experience of Bioffect and my other finds.

Bioffect 30 Day Treatment has the company’s signature EGF (barley sh-oligopeptide-1), but it has also two different types of growth factors, KGF and Il-1a. These were both new to me and I’m not aware of another serum that contains them and so was curious as to how they differ from the more ubiquitous epidermal growth factors.

I did some research and found that KGF stands for keratinocyte growth factor and it is in the fibroblast growth factor family. There are many types of growth factors and they do different things. TGF-b, for example, stimulates collagen production, promotes the synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins and inhibits matrix degradation (or the thinning of your skin).

Anyway, getting back to KGF, scientists think that while EPG has a key role in wound healing, KGF may come into its own later in the repair process by stabilizing epidermal turnover and barrier function (source). The other key active in 30 Day Treatment, Il-1a, is interleukin-1 alpha and a kind of protein that is involved in inflammatory response and the stimulation of collagenase.

On the face of it, these three actives seem to be very complimentary and Bioffect has done a clever job of giving itself an edge over some of the competition – certainly over the very many brands that use some form of oligopeptide-1. But the bottom line is whether 30 Day Treatment works.

I am impressed. After a month, the texture of my skin is really much improved. I would not say that my skin feels a great deal firmer, but the texture is fantastic – smoother, reduced lines and with a much younger radiance. The only snag is the price - $290. I can’t justify spending nearly $300 a month on one serum. Anticipating that many women will react in the same way, Bioffect suggests using it 1-4 times per year for an intense boost.

Thanks for the review, do you recommend other comparable brands, but less expensive?
