A fun, multipurpose product that gently cleanses and hydrates

Gentle on skin, moisturizes as a mask

Mask can be messy

by Kelly F.

I was the winner of the Dare to Try for the Board and Batten Begin Again Micro Facial Buff and Masque ($42/4oz. in the shop) and enjoyed using the product for the better part of the last month.  This product has a very big name for something made of very simple and safe ingredients. I am 51 years old with fair combination skin and I am post- menopausal.

The product came in a nice glass container with a small opening from which you pour out the very light powdery dry formula.  Awkward to use at first, but soon I was just pouring out about a teaspoon into the palm of my hand and adding water from the tap with ease.  No idea how you would be able to complete the accurate measurements as described on the bottle as the mouth of the bottle is far too small to insert any kind of measuring scoop. The formula then formed a nice sudsy lather that I applied to my face.

After massaging onto my face it rinsed very clean without any noticeable residue. I do have to mention that this is probably the most gentle cleanser I have ever used, no noticeable "buff" and would often take a double cleanse to remove my sunscreen at the end of the day.

There are very few ingredients here. The product's base is corn starch with quinoa flour and oat flour (which can also be very soothing on skin) to lightly scrub away dirt. Coconut-based fatty acid sodium cocoyl isethionate acts as a surfactant and there's honey as well as a few organic fruit extracts to brighten skin. No preservatives or nasties!

For use as a mask, you mix honey instead of water with the powder and I did try this and immediately felt the firm and glow as it is definitely moisturizing, but the trade-off is the mess you now are faced with cleaning up. Best if you just get in the shower after this process!

No idea how to describe the scent other than wonderfully clean, certainly not offensive as there are no artificial ingredients in this product. There was no noticeable change in the texture or hyperpigmentation over the last month but it is my opinion that it is unreasonable to expect that of a cleanser anyway. This product has been fun to use!

Thank you for thorough review Kelly. I cam across this brand and thought it intriguing. I did wonder about the "mix at home" part though. As I discovered the other day, corn starch, quinoa flour and oat flour are all great alternatives to talc:
