When I found out that I had been selected to review Briogeo Be Kind, Be Gentle Cleansing Shampoo ($19), I was very excited. I always buy professional hair care products from a salon to try and maintain strong, healthy hair. I also like to switch up my shampoos and conditioners every so often, so I was anxious to give this shampoo a try.
I am in my 40s and fair-skinned with wavy blonde hair past my shoulders. Every three months, I get my hair professionally highlighted, and those out there who do the same know that it is a bit of work to try and maintain healthy hair. I have a certain regimen I use on my hair to be careful to not dry it out. I usually wash it every three days, and each time I do, I use either a mask or a keratin conditioning treatment.
The first couple of times I tried Briogeo Shampoo, I was unimpressed. Although it had a nice, soft scent to it, it was very watery in texture, and I didn't get the lather that I was looking for. I also didn't feel that my scalp was clean. Only the strands of my hair were "squeaky clean," feeling as though I had washed my hair with a gentle dish detergent. I had gone back to using my usual shampoo but was still so drawn to the Briogeo Be Kind, Be Gentle Cleansing Shampoo because of all its natural ingredients, so I thought I might give it another chance.
Generally, when I shampoo my hair, I only need to shampoo once, but because of all the natural ingredients Briogeo contains — green tea antioxidants, bamboo extract and aloe vera among other natural ingredients and vitamins, with no silicones, parabens or sulfates — I felt as though I could use more of this shampoo than I had been. (I had only been using a quarter-size initially). To my surprise, it made a bit of difference! And because it is so gentle, I was able to wash my hair twice without it feeling stripped away. I still wasn't happy with the lack of lather, but it did leave my scalp feeling as clean as my hair itself. It definitely felt strong and had a shine that I was looking for. Not sure if I would buy this shampoo again, but the amount of shampoo I used certainly made a difference.
