Calming ingredients provide instant relief to stressed skin, and the cool gel texture is wonderfully soothing

Soothes skin and calms irritation and rashes

Not for purists

ClarityRx Cold Compress Soothing Cucumber Mask ($27.50) is billed as for the “weary and irritated,” which sounds like an accurate description of me when I am getting hungry (hangry) and my blood sugar level is plummeting. I wouldn’t call my skin weary and irritated, but it is rosacea-prone and likes to be soothed and pampered. Cold Compress does just that.

This emerald-green gel mask lives up to its name. It is actually very cool, almost as though chilled, on contact with the skin. It will be refreshingly welcome on a hot day — a phenomenon that I can barely remember during this endlessly chilly and damp spring. The ingredients list refers to “fragrant oil,” which doesn’t really help me define the scent, but I am going to go with chopped parsley.

The main ingredients for soothing and hydrating are aloe vera gel and extracts of cucumber, chamomile and yarrow flowers. The latter has “remarkable” wound healing capabilities, according to research. Although St John’s Wort has long history of dermatological use, it shows up rarely in skin care products. Used in the treatment of wounds and minor burns, it has recently been found to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antimicrobial activities, as published in Planta Medica.

With a nod towards anti-aging, there’s amino acid condensate — which is basically putting two amino acids together, eliminating the water moelcules and forming a peptide. Cold Compress also has two exfoliants, pineapple and salicylic acid. There are a few things not to like, including the pH balancing agent triethanolamine and preservatives phenoxyethanol and sodium benzoate.

But despite these potential irritants, ClarityRX Cold Compress has proved to be much more than a refreshing skin soother. It also took down an itchy rash on my décolleté and under my right ear.
