I’ve been testing a brightening serum from an Australian company called DesertPea Skin Bright Serum ($59.90) for approximately 7 weeks. I’m happy to give it a 4 star rating out of 5 — here’s why!
When first introduced to a new product to try, I like to give their website a very quick overview. I don’t want to spend too much time on there so as not to color my opinion until I am through testing. I found their website easy to understand, highly educational and informative about skin care, and not necessarily specific to their products. For example, do you know exactly what a serum is and why we use it? Serums are concentrated active treatments for specific skin purposes that absorb quickly into the skin and formulated to allow adequate absorption and intake into the targeted areas. A serum is not a moisturizer so you almost always need to use a moisturizer in addition.
DesertPea products are formulated with ingredients high in anti-inflammatories and free of known allergens. Their Skin Bright Serum is a mixture of skin-whitening and brightening cosmeceuticals known to reduce pigmentation; it acts as a mild exfoliant while hydrating and protecting skin and preventing dryness. It is supposed to be for all skin conditions including acne, rosacea, pigmentation, aged skin, fine lines and wrinkles. DesertPea also suggests this product can be used as a brightening eye cream as well, which will give an instant tightening feel and remove the need to purchase a separate treatment product. It sounded like just what I was looking for. I have a lot of subtle pigmentation (age spots) in my mid 60’s skin that I wanted to address. I don’t know anyone my age who wouldn’t want youthful bright skin again!
I noticed slight brightening after two weeks. I used it religiously morning and evening through the holidays and throughout a long bout with the flu, and continued to use it through all my recent traveling. I’ve been home a week now and I’ve had a chance to evaluate this serum under the same lighting conditions. I can say that yes, my skin looks so much brighter, but those little brown spots are still there and cannot say without a doubt they are lighter. I am not so sure about the instant tightening either. I wish I could have seen a more dramatic fading of the spots, but I like the brightening it's done so far. The serum comes in a 2.36 oz bottle and the price on their website is $59.00 for this size! Very economical and a very, very good deal — especially considering I still have half a bottle left. The serum itself is lightweight, not greasy, with no odor and I had no skin reactions. The pump works flawlessly and delivers just the right amount, although I do have a small complaint about the cap. It was really hard to put the cap back on since it seemed just a bit too small. This and the disappointment about the fading is the reason I gave it a 4-star rating instead of 5 stars. In any case, I would definitely buy this again because it's economical, it brightens and it contains no parabens.
Their ingredients are natural or nature identical. DesertPea uses actives derived from native fruits, herbs and plants, as well as Australian natural and certified organic ingredients where possible. These are then fused with compatible and highly effective cosmetic actives. They state that their products are formulated to restore optimal skin function by way of hydration and maintenance of the skin’s pH to reduce or slow the signs of aging and protect the skin barrier. They use very few synthetic ingredients and have identified them on their ingredient listing along with the reason for their use. It’s impressive that they would disclose this information upfront on their website.
The ingredients mostly responsible for the obvious results of skin brightening are 4% niacinamicde, 2% N.A.G. (n-acetyl glucosamine) and 1% hyaluronic acid. Niacinamide and NAG each individually are known for reducing pigmentation and sun spots. But the combination of these products reduced the appearance of irregular pigmentation significantly more than either used alone, by 97%! The addition of hyaluronic acid helps restore collagen and elastic fibers that account for skin thinning, hydrating and reinforcing the skin barrier. I noticed that it helps make the skin look smoother too.
