This detangling spray, made especially for curly hair, failed to deliver on all counts

Does not untangle and makes hair feel sticky

DevaCurl’s products are designed especially for curly, wavy and chemically dehydrated hair and are 100% sulfate, paraben and silicone free. So, considering how my wavy hair gets knotty quite easily no matter how rich of a conditioner I use or how often I comb my hair (brushing often causes me breakage), I truly hoped that DevaCurl No Comb Detangling Spray ($19.95) would be the solution that I have been searching for to tame my tangly tresses.

Generally, detangling spray makes my hair too oily, but DevaCurl No Comb Detangling Spray promises “lightweight conditioning” and doesn’t contain any heavy oils that would ordinarily weigh my hair down. Instead, it contains panthenol, and as the Truth In Aging database notes, “binding properties allow it to coat and seal the hair follicles, lubricating the shaft and making the hair appear shiny.” database. The product also touts Botanical Quaternim Complex and Palm Quaternim Complex, neither of which I have ever heard of before nor could find any information about. That immediately triggered my “gimmick” radar. Nonetheless, I gave DevaCurl No Comb Detangling Spray an honest go.

The first time I used it, I sprayed it on my damp hair and used my fingers to detangle as suggested. The first thing I noticed was the product’s awful fragrance that was horribly reminiscent of sunscreen. But even worse was the fact that it made my hair sticky! Trying to get my fingers through led to more knots, plus breakage that left a mess on the bathroom floor. Even with a comb, the spray’s tacky texture made untangling my hair even more of project than usual.

Seeing as using the DevaCurl No Comb Detangling Spray while my hair was wet wasn’t working for me, I tried using it on dry hair instead. Unfortunately, that too was far from a success. Not only did the unpleasant scent linger longer in my hair than before, it dulled my hair and dried out the ends rather than adding shine and softness as promised. Considering that I have been dying my hair for well over a decade, my ends crave hydration, and this certainly didn’t delivery any.

Overall, DevaCurl No Comb Detangling Spray was a complete disappointment.  It was a real miss for me, and if it couldn’t unknot my wavy hair, I cannot imagine how those with genuinely curly locks would fare.

One thing's for sure: if you have curly hair you're never going to be able to predict what it will do! :-) I have coarse, thick, dry, curly (3b/c) hair and, for me, DevaCurl No-Comb detangling spray is outstanding. Aside from the Mist-er Right lavender refresher spray, Deva products usually make my hair as dry as straw. I tested the No-Comb detangling spray at a local store that was sold out of the refresher spray and I was utterly shocked at how my hair seemed to "melt" into smooth softness. My hair knots so badly I often have to cut out the snarls, but this spray, on dry hair, seems to dissolve the tangles on contact. It also softens my hair beautifully, and I think it's a better refresher spray than DevaCurl Mist-er Right. It adds some nice moisture to my dry hair. The fragrance is a matter of taste, of course, but I find the lemon-lime scent of this detangler refresher; especially when oodles of other curl products smell like coconut or shea butter (nice scents, but I'm tired of them.)
