The house of Dior was established in 1946 in Paris as a vanity project of wealthy businessman Marcel Boussac.

A year later, the company's first perfume, Miss Dior, was introduced. Fragrances became a major profit-driver for Dior. The Diorama perfume was released in 1949, followed in 1981 by a men's fragrance, Jules, and a perfume called Poison. Dior's total fragrances now number over 88.

Though the first Dior lipstick (matte finish in eight shades of orange) was released in 1955, it was not until the 70's that Dior added skin care to its mix.

When Dior created the world's first moisturizing lipstick in the 1960s, it also introduced matching nail enamel. A complete, colorful cosmetics line followed soon after, including foundation, blush, powder, eyeshadow, and mascara.

Dior has a 42% stake in luxury goods giant LVMH.

Today, Dior's skincare segment produces breakthrough anti-aging treatments with eight high-tech lines addressing specific skin concerns.

The newest release in skin care is the Capture Totale anti-aging range, which includes two creams, an eye treatment, a serum foundation, a concentrated serum, and a firming body concentrate.

Diorskin Nude, Dior's latest foundation, blends 100% mineral-infused pigments and water to improve the look of skin over time.

J'adore, one of Dior's most recent perfumes, has become the gold standard in its fragrance line.

The Dior Beauty Jazz Club Collection for fall 2009 was inspired by the jazz scene and femme fetales of the 1920's era.

Liposomes were reportedly invented by Dior.

Bio-peptide complex appears in Capture Totale Multi-Perfection Eye Treatment.

Yellow Iris extract appears in Dior Capture Totale Multi-Perfection Concentrated Serum.

Alpha Longoza and Centuline are the anti-aging ingredients in the new Capture Totale range.

TIA's Take:

Dior is better known for bedazzled palettes and vanity-worthy fragrances than proven results. Ingredients are impossible to come by, as is contact information for the company's customer service staff. Even though Dior skincare products are exorbitantly expensive (around $120-$180), effective actives often appear to be outnumbered by lackluster fillers and irritating preservatives. The perfume and makeup options are generally a better buy. In spite of inescapable irritants and artificial fragrances, these products are backed by extensive research and development. Textures are silky smooth, colors are long-lasting, and the end effects are generally popular. Some makeup items that seem to get high ratings from users include Diorskin Nude foundation, Diorskin Shimmer Stars highlighters, and Diorshow Black Out Spectacular Volume Intense mascara.
