While this cream packs a powerful punch of proven ingredients, it did not provide comparable results to his other treatments

Smooths and brightens skin

Unpleasant fragrance; not for purists

By Tina G.

As I cruise though my forties, I find that my skin care goals are becoming more focused on undoing sun damage, firming up sagging skin (hey jowls, I’m talking about you) and restoring lost radiance. Dr. Dennis Gross C+ Collagen Deep Cream ($74) seemed to check off all of the above boxes, and I’m already a huge fan of the line. This formula includes camellia, japonica seed, sunflower and rice bran extracts to nourish skin, the brands proprietary energy complex of antioxidant-rich superoxide dismutase and CoQ10, and 3-O C vitamin C technology. The results promised include smoother and brighter skin.

My skin is very oily, so while I do want radiance and firming, this cream was too heavy for me to wear during the day under makeup. In the brand’s own words, it has an “intense concentration of nourishing oils.” They are included to repair the skin’s barrier and reduce trans-epidermal water loss, and they can likely be attributed to the cream’s rich consistency. As a night cream, I must say that it worked very well, though. Those with dry skin would probably enjoy using it twice a day for even more glow.

There is a downside to this product — and a big downside for me — in that it has an unpleasant smell. When you open the beautiful glass jar, you are met immediately with a scent not unlike a bad self-tanner. Once applied, it lingers and despite the positives, I found myself not wanting to use the cream based entirely on the long-lasting smell. I’m not usually picky about fragrance, and I can easily tolerate skin care that smells fresh, floral or fruity. I even prefer a vitamin C product that smells like citrus, because it enhances the sensory experience. I believe the strong scent in this product is likely attributed to the potent ingredients and not added parfum. Dr. Dennis Gross is known for taking natural ingredients and augmenting them with cutting-edge science.

Now, for the positives: This cream did not cause breakouts or irritation of any kind, and I did notice an improvement in skin tone and texture over the trial period. I always carry my skin care down to my neck and décolleté, and this is a nice option for that as well. My skin was noticeably smoother and appeared more plump and radiant each morning after application. But, even though I am a huge fan of the Dr. Dennis Gross skincare line, it pains me to say that this product just didn’t measure up for me. At the same price-point, his Ferulic + Retinol Anti-Aging Moisturizer has more horsepower. And the unpleasant scent was such a factor with the C+ Collagen Deep Cream, I would not repurchase.

Thanks Tina for your candid and helpful review. I think in this new C+ Collagen series, the real winner is C+ Collagen Brighten and Firm Vitamin C Serum - a standout product. But I didn't really like the eye cream and this Deep Cream - per your review - doesn't seem to match the serum's high performance.
