Dr Hauschka's natural lipstick

Reviewed by Marta September 20, 2009 0 Comments
Having made friends with Dr Hauschka over his rosacea curing Rythmic Conditioner, I decided to take a look at his makeup. All natural makeup can be less that satisfying in terms of color and staying power. Dr Hauschka passes the first test with, well, flying colors. The range has a good selection of shades and the tones are vivid, modern and pretty.

I liked the light, not too sticky feel. But unfortunately, light isn't always a desirable quality in a lipstick. The staying power of Dr H leaves a lot to be desired. At best you'll get a couple of hours out of it and this lipstick will disappear altogether at the merest site of a wine glass. The directions say "apply as needed". Right. I was amused to see that they rather patronizingly also caution the user to consider what clothes they are going to wear with a particular shade.

Oddly, I found it a little tingly, as though there was the inclusion of some kind of menthol or other ingredient designed to plump lips temporarily. Looking through the ingredients, however, I can't see what causes this. The ingredients are, in fact, not dissimilar to the Dr Hauschka Lip Care Stick. Anthyllis vulneraria is a great favorite of Dr H, one of the common names for the plant used to be woundwort, which gives you some idea of its healing properties. There are a few other things that will do your lips the power good including antioxidant apricot kernel and rose hip.

There are a couple of things I am less keen on. Benzyl salicylate is a known irritant that is classified as an allergan in Europe, where its use is restricted. And castor oil, although safe by the time it reaches the consumer, is very dangerous to harvest and conscientious manufacturers should be looking at alternatives.
