New York’s humid summer weather can make me a little desperate. Desperate enough to turn a blind eye to some very nasty ingredients in the hope that if they don’t kill me, they night at least tame frizz. And so I closed my eyes to the ingreients list, took a deep breath and tried out Fekkai Advanced Brilliant Glossing Cream ($24). It did nothing to impart shine, brilliant or even just a faint glossing. But I have to admit that it rendered my hair incredibly well behaved. For two whole days!

Being free of frizz despite summer storms is a wondrous thing. Ironically, Advanced Brilliant Glossing Cream made my hair look rather dull. But as I no longer looked as if I was carrying around my own magnetic force field, I didn’t care. At some point though, I was going to have to face up to what was in Fekkai formula. I just hoped there was nothing too hair raising.

Unsurprisingly, there is a lot of silicone. Still, I was pleased to see that Fekkai’s signature olive oil is up near the top of the ingredients list. I was lot less pleased to see it followed by polyacrylamide, which can be contaminated by acrylamide, a known toxin.

The ingredient that is responsible for anti-frizz is polyquaternium-67. Polyquaterniums are positively charged, they neutralize the negative charges of most shampoos and hair proteins and help hair lie flat. There isn’t all that much data on them, but generally they seem to be harmless. Not so bismuth oxychloride, which can irritate the skin and eyes and should be avoided by people with rosacea.

Cinnamidopropyltrimonium chloride UVB ray protector and studies have shown that is particularly effective for blondes. I haven’t found any information about its safety. There’s the inevitable potentially hazardous preservative, idoproynyl-butylcarbamate, a toxin according to Danish researchers.

Overall, have the same reaction to Fekkai Advanced Brilliant Glossing Cream as I did some time ago to Fekkai’s Glossing shampoo: it doesn’t have me running for a garbage bag, but its not something I am ever going to use with a great deal of enthusiasm. Until the next thunderstorm.
