Five Best Body Lotions 2009

Click here for an updated article: Five Best for Body 2014

It struck me a few months ago - I was probably having a BBD (bad body day) - that my knees were looking wrinkled. Immediately, I had a flash back to London's Park Lane Hotel, where I once saw an attractive brunette in a short sun dress. Her face was smooth and taut. There was no doubt that she'd had work done, but she looked great and she had a very handsome young man in tow. Good for her, I thought. Then I noticed her legs. She had the knees of a 90-year old. So I've been trying to apply the same rigorous (some might say obsessive) care to hunting out potions for the body as I do my face. After all, I don't want to turn 50 and have to wage a one woman campaign to bring back the maxi skirt. Fortunately, my mission seems to be paying off and I can offer a clutch of the best body lotions that I have found so far.

Pevonia De-Aging Body Lotion ($48). This is one of my latest finds and I am really pleased to add it to the list of best body lotions. The ingredients that are charged with saving my knees are marine elastin and collagen, promegranate, niacinamide and retinol. Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B that is a precurser to co-enzymes that play a key role in cellular energy production. Pomegranate has ellagic acid, which helps to increase the body’s own built-in antioxidant glutathione, protecting cells from free radical damage.

This Works Skin Deep Dry Leg Oil ($60). This is a brilliant brilliant body lotion for dry winter legs. If you use this a few times a week, flaky and thirsty skin will be a thing of the past. I've discovered that the trick is to use a small amount as too much doesn't absorb. One of the main ingredients is macadamia oil. Macadamians are amazingly nutritional and 22% of the oil is omega 7, a fatty acid. You'll be even more impressed by peach kernal oil. This is 44% fatty acids, is very easily absorbed and relieves irritations and itching.

AminoGenesis Cocoon Total Body Emollient. The name is peculiar and it looks like a can of fixative spray, but Copley's find is a fast-working balm for dry skin. It contains 17 of the 20 essential amino acids, that support proteins in the skin, such as collagen, elastin, lipids, and all cellular tissues, and when used in certain combinations, help regulate oil production in the skin and scalp.  Threonine and lysine are particularly important for the formation of collagen, while histidine neutralizes free radicals and helps prevent skin cell damage.  More than half of the skin’s natural moisturizing factors (NMF), which prevent damage from dryness and irritants, are made up of amino acids and their derivatives.

Terralina Body Lotion ($28). This is what Chris had to say in her review: "The real test was to see if it would deter the scaly patches that creep up on my legs as soon as the weather starts turning cold here in Minnesota. It’s still pretty warm for the first part of November, but even so, my legs not only are free of the scalies, they just look BETTER. Nicely moisturized, and the skin almost seems plumper. I will definitely be adding this lotion to my routine." I have also enjoyed using Terralina. Its mostly olive oil in all its forms, which along with the tea extract, is a great antixoidant. Ceramide-2 is also a good anti-ager. Shea butter enriches.

Jack Black Cool Body Moisture Lotion ($22). This is what Jimmy had to say: "Jack Black is one of my favorite men's grooming lines packed with great ingredients and sharp packaging to boot). First of all, it's very inexpensive. For 16 ounces (thats a whole pound!) it will set you back $22. And this baby lasts months. Secondly, the lotion is ultra lightweight, perfect for our skin type that doesn't necessarily need a heavy cream. It contains soy proteins and vitamin E which helps/prevents damaged cells. The jojoba oil penetrates
deep to keep the skin hydrated. Its also practically scentless, which I prefer, so it doesn't conflict with a natural odor, or cologne. The best part is the menthyl lactate, which allows the cooling agent to kick in, refreshing the skin and giving it a very subtle tingle. It's perfect for hot days, hot showers, or even a hard workout when your body can use some exterior stimulation."

Can you also please compare the Caudalie Nourishing Body Lotion? It supposedly firms the skin.
