Five Best Collagen Boosters 2018

January 31, 2018 Reviewed by Marta 6 Comments
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies at about 25% to 35% of all protein content. Unlike other proteins, collagen can be found inside and outside cells. About 27 different variations have been identified and they all ultimately have the same job - to prevent connective tissues from stretching. We are interested in types l, ll and lll. These keep our skin supple, plump and line free. It is normal for collagen to degrade as we get older so we are looking for ingredients that synthesize collagen production. Here's my Five Best with collagen boosting actives.
  • Dr. Dennis Gross C+ Collagen Brighten and Firm Vitamin C Serum

C+ Collagen Brighten and Firm Vitamin C Serum ($78 in the store) is big on vitamin C. Vitamin C is a co-factor with several amino acids for the synthesis of collagen and a deficiency in vitamin C will result in destroyed collagen. The collagen aspect of the formula is in the collagen amino acids and carnitine. The amino acids arginine and carnitine form something called creatine, which in turn stimulates the skin to produce more collagen and elastin. The “energy complex” also includes the powerful antioxidants niacinamide, CoQ10 and superoxide dismutase. This skin-firming serum also has an addtional benefit of brightening the complexion.

  • Medik8 Firewall

Medik8 Firewall ($145 in the shop) was a Five Best collagen booster in 2014 and deservedly makes it back again this year. It is well known that copper peptides are important to collagen production. Copper is the key mineral in lysyl oxidase, an enzyme that weaves together collagen and elastin. There are several forms of copper in Firewall. Also important is Matrixyl 3000. This is a combination of two synthetic peptides. Although the manufacturers claims that they increase collagen have not been verified, anecdotal evidence supports that this ingredient works. There are many other interesting actives in Firewall including cysteine, which helps synthesize glutathione, one of the body’s most important natural antioxidants and detoxifiers.

  • KERACELL Re-Cu-perate

KERACELL Re-Cu-perate ($100 in the shop) is an intensive formula that is specially formulated with human stem cell technology and copper peptides, known for their impact on the skin recovery process. This is a new discovery for me and I am on my second bottle of this fantastic line eraser and collagen booster. KERACELL blends growth factors from both adipose and fibroblast to create a balanced complex. Tiny nano-lipids (1000 times smaller than cells) called exosomes to help the delivery of the stem cells into the skin when applied topically.

  • E'shee Elixir of Life KI Therapy Serum

E'shee Clinical Esthetic Elixir of Life KI Therapy Serum ($189 in the shop) is a powerful serum featuring a unique collagen builder: Far Infrared Ceramic Powder. This is a wound healer that research has shown increases collagen regeneration and infiltration of fibroblasts that expressed transforming growth factor-(TGF-1). This serum also has the brand's signature FGF peptides, which are in the words of E'shee's founder, Nataly Giter, the basic building blocks of any fibrous tissue in human body.

  • Your Best Face Control

Your Best Face Control ($160 in the shop) takes collagen seriously with well-chosen peptides. There is the tripeptide, Relistase, to boost collagen 1 synthesis, which restores firmness. Potent peptide Matrixyl 3000 works to combat free radicals while it mimics the appearance of broken down collagen, causing your skin to react by producing more collagen, as well as elastin. Then there is another tripeptide, marketed under the simpler name of Syn-Hycan. Specifically, it is aimed at lifting sagging skin.

Hi Beth, I have "outed" product twins in the past. They occur when a lab white labels a formula to anyone who cares to pay for it. Typically these formulas are created to maximize margin not to create the best possible product. I do not recommend them. The products that I select are uniquely created by independent companies that maximize the quality of the ingredients. In other words, you get what you pay for.

Since many of us cannot afford these exorbitantly priced products, how about adding comparable, reasonably priced products as alternatives. With everything out there, I'm quite sure that every item mentioned has a less expensive 'twin'.

Robin, one of those comments is in fact mine, but I would also add that there is research showing that niacinamide and vitamin C together are effective: https://www.jaad.org/article/S0190-9622(08)01841-0/fulltext
and another shows that niacinamide stabilizes vitamin C: http://ir.cnu.edu.tw/handle/310902800/27122

Marta, I am new to your site and am enjoying it so far. I would like to know if you have a respose to the 2 previous comments above regarding the combining of niacinamide and asorbic acid. I am very interested in hearing more from you regarding this interesting issue. I am very impressed with the knowledge of the other members here and I look forward to reading and learning more. Thanks for your time.

Hi Marie, this is one of those urban myths perpetuated around the internet. It is my understanding that niacinamide and ascorbic acid each require a different pH balance making them difficult to formulate together. Newer forms of vitamin C are more flexible and my take is that if they are combined by a reputable brand then they should be fine.

I’m curious about the Dr. Gross serum - everything I’ve read says you should NOT combine niacinamide and ascorbic acid. Do the other antioxidants cancel that out?
