Five Best concealers and foundations

October 24, 2012 Reviewed by Marta 1 Comment

The morning after the night before, burning the candle at both ends, transitioning from one season to another (let alone one decade to another) – life can simply get between a girl and her porcelain complexion. As we get older, spackling on the war paint can make us look even older. So I’ve picked out my favorite cover-ups and camouflagers. No one but you and I will ever know!

La Vie Celeste Crème Foundation ($39 in the TIA shop). I love this foundation. I even took a pot traveling to the UK recently (I am a ruthless packer and there are no unwanted stowaways in my toilet bag). I find Creme Foundation is the perfect texture for me. It smooths on easily (I use my fingers) and I find the coverage just right and very malleable. It can be spread as a fairly sheer skin tone improver or layered where more coverage is needed – it precludes the need for additional concealer in my experience. This foundation pretty much keeps going all day as well. With a handful of antioxidants and nothing nasty at all. Read the full review.

Jane Iredale Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream ($48). This is a BB cream that deserves a B+ grade. If only because it qualifies as about the only one that I can recommend. It has the inevitable silicones, but they come from coconut alkanes. There are a few antioxidants and natural preservatives. Glow Time is so lightweight that almost instantly I forget that I am wearing it. And yet this is no wimp in the performance department. Coverage lasts all day and into the evening. Osmosis Age Defying Treatment Concealer ($29). This does double duty with an anti-aging moisture stick on one end and the color concealer on the other. The concealer is creamy and easy to blend, doing a good job of hiding dark circles, blemishes and dark spots, providing  a good match with skin tone. There are silicones and mineral oil in the concealer, but that may be worth the compromise for all-day coverage and a more radiant look. The moisture stick has shea butter, argan, apricot and rosehip oils. As with all Osmosis products, there are mostly good ingredients, an emphasis on performance and a decent price point. RMS “Un” Cover-Up ($36 in the shop). As our contributor Cheryl says: “it’s easy to blend and layer if necessary, and it truly becomes invisible.” Invisible is the operative word and it is important to note the word “Un” in the product name. RMS “Un Cover Up does not provide a layer of. Rather it camouflages imperfections and then adjusts to the skin’s natural tone. Some people find it shiny. I do not (but my skin tends to be a little shiny anyway).  Bottom line, this is an incredibly useful product that is perfect for covering – and even calming – rosacea. Read the full review.

Juice Beauty Finishing Powder ($22). The finishing powder is made with plant powders, fruit extracts, and minerals – among them no less than 13 certified organic ingredients. Valerie describes the finishing powder as super fine and soft,  silky-smooth, providing commendable control over an oily T-zone, and never settling into creases or fine lines by the end of the day. Osmotics Inner Light ($30). I’ve been buying this for more than three years and haven’t yet found anything to better it as a base. Rather than color, Inner Light is based on spherical pigments that, along with some silicone, plant oils and vitamins, create a light-defusing layer. Skin looks clearer and I would even say dewy. Inner Light definitely smooths out wrinkles and imperfections. Top with a sheer foundation such as La Vie Celeste’s where needed, or a dab of concealer and for my daily minimalist look, and I am good to go.

I think Alima Pure is worth an honorable mention. I mix their matte foundation and balancing primer powder and use that over my sunscreen. Once I got the shade right, it's perfect for taking the edge off the zinc oxide, and the kaolin in the balancing primer powder absorbs excess oils. It doesn't completely cover up the redness or thread veins on my cheeks--you can still see the real "me," but better.
