Five Best Dry Skin Solutions

Solution for:

Dry Skin

There are times when a moisturizer simply doesn’t cut it. People with dry skin or those of us with seasonally dry skin (my face feels like the first line of defense whenever there's a snowstorm here in New York) need heavy-duty hydration. Without adequate help, dry skin can become red, itchy and inflamed. This is my advice on the Five Best Dry Skin Solutions to buy from the mass of moisturizers out there.

  • For Very Dry Skin

Eslor Active Night Cream ($95 in the shop). Those with very dry skin that crave a rich day cream should look to the night cream departmen for heavy-duty help. Eslor’s Active Night Cream is rich with a capital R and not suitable for anyone with oily skin. Dry skins will drink it up and find that wrinkles are reduced over time as well. The collagen-building peptide combo, Matrixyl 3000 is the key active and there are two types of vitamin C, as well as antioxidant sea buckthorn. Carrot, avocado, hazelnut and peach kernel oils nourish the skin, along with mango and almond butters. A touch of lactic acid clears the complexion. Makes a great hand cream too!

  • For Redness-Prone Skin

Arcona Overnight Cellular Repair Complex ($58). I would recommend Arcona Overnight Cellular Repair for anyone looking for a hydrating and replenishing night cream that will also calm redness-prone skin. There is an interesting selection of unusual ingredients including rutin, which is helpful for broken veins, moringa, ursolic acid, and redness reducing "kangaroo's paws."

  • For An Anti-Aging Boost

Medik8 Hydr8 Day XD Youth Activating Moisturizer ($80 in the shop). I hesit8 (sorry, couldn’t resist) not to recommend Hydrat8: rich, intense and hydrating without being greasy. The bonus is that the skin looks dewy – even under makeup. This has Medik8’s signature epidermal growth factor, sh-oligpeptide-1 and so it makes a good complement to Medik8 Growth Factor serum ($160 in the shop), as well as being a wrinkle eliminator in its own right.

  • For Light-Yet-Deep Hydration

La Vie Celeste Extra Rich Cream ($75 in the shop). A long-time favorite, LVC’s Extra Rich frequently gets Five Best love and was a Readers’ Choice winner last summer for being "a game changer in the world of moisturizers." The cream feels luxurious while hydrating and moisturizing without ever feeling too heavy. Intelligently-chosen ingredients include antioxidant, R-Lipoic Acid, the sagging skin lifter ChroNOline and apple stem cell.

  • For a Double-Duty Serum + Cream

BRAD Biophotonic Ultra Elastin Sculpting Firming Cream Complex ($195 in the shop). With five-star rave reviews, this is the be-all moisturizer. It beats most others I have tried. The fact that it has peptides and antioxidants of good quality (amongst a ton of really good botanicals as well) means that it doubles as your serum, justifying the price tag by eliminating the need to have two products. Use night or day for improved skin texture and tone.

Hi Pam, the research on sodium benzoate and vitamin C looked at soda drinks. I haven't seen it repeated in anything topical. I usually point out that there is a potential connection, but have to be clear that I don't actually know for a fact that the interaction of vitamin C and sodium benzoate in a topical cream is a "no-no".

I was looking at the Eslor product and noticed that the ingredients contain both Vitamin C and sodium benzoate. I thought that was a "no-no" combination. Is there a concern with this combination in this product?
