Five Best Facial Masks 2008

Is a Solution for:
Dull Skin, Oily Skin

Abrione Hydrodynamic Facial Masque ($22). This mask gives you a just-been-on-vacation dewy glow. Skin looks even better the following day. Alpha beta hydroxy acids and pineapple do the exfoliation job. Of interest amongst the botanical ingredients is passiflora incarnata (passionfruit extract), which is an anti-inflammatory and analgesic as well as a source of vitamin C. The firming of the skin is achieved by the essential oils of cedarwood, eucalyptus and geranium. Dead sea mud and montmorrillonite provide minerals and detoxify.

Astara Blue Flame Purification Mask ($42). Purification is the optimal word. This is the mask for dealing with breakouts and sensitivity. Not recommended for very dry skin. I found, however, that it does an excellent job on the T-zone. If you have oily skin, enlarged pores or problem areas, Flame Purification Mask is for you. You can also dab it onto a zit and leave it overnight. There's lots of aloe and worthy of a shout out is red clover extract. Research from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) confirms that red clover extract contains four anti-tumor compounds. Red clover also contains the powerful antioxidant tocopherol, which is a form of Vitamin E. Lemongrass is also a good antioxidant, according to a Tunisian study.

Pangea Organics Japanese Matcha Tea with Acai & Goji
($28). Unisex, but men seem to go for this. It's the jack-of-all-trades mask (deep cleansing, detoxifying, exfoliating, toning, hydrating, nourishing, etc). Extremely relaxing and smells like the forest. Matcha is green tea and with superfruits goji and acai, this mask packs an antioxidant punch.

Natur Chaotic Powder Facial Mask ($53). You mix this powder at home with yoghurt. Activated charcoal draws out deep pore-clogging impurities like a magnet. Other ingredients include green clay, vitamin C ester and blue green algae. Very earth-friendly and so no frills. Von Nature is certified vegan, cruelty free, sulfate free, paraben free and toxin free. A holistic treat!

Jan Marini Age Intervention Regeneration Facial Mask ($90). Resveratrol is the component in grapes that does all the antioxidant work and it is common in many cosmetic ingredients. The twist here is that it is manufactured using fermentation with pichia pastoris. Marini’s new facial mask packs even more of a punch with a fistful of peptides and a slew of antioxidant: algae. white and green tea extracts, rooibos and pomegranate. There are also fatty acids and ubquinone (the big deal in Elizabeth Arden’s Prevage). My only quibble is that it has every paraben known to man, plus phenoxyethanol.

On your: "make your own Vitamic C serum and take our challenge" link -- it goes nowhere related to DIY vitamin c serum. Since I am interested in a DIY C serum - please advise on this glitch.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've replaced Kinerase with Jan Marini, which made me realize it is time to do an updated Five Best facial masks. Coming soon....

    Hi Marta,

I think the review/description for the Kinerase mask is a repeat of the Astara Blue Flame mask. It might've been copied incorrectly.
