Five Best for a younger body

Five Best for a younger body Jan 2013

Feeling a little flabby after the holiday season, I am turning my attention to getting a firmer body and a younger looking one. A judicious combination of exercise and beauty products are starting to do the trick. But I don’t just mean slathering on some body lotion; a younger-looking body needs to be peeled, polished chiseled and I have just the tools with these Five Bests:

Bar Method (from $20 in the shop). I love doing Bar Method exercises, especially from the Super Sculpting series. These movements actually reshape the muscles to make them longer, leaner and cut. If you want a butt lift, Bar Method is the most efficient way to get one.  Be inspired by founder Burr Leonard, who has the body of a fit 40 year old at 60-something . “Seat” raising and shaping is one of the key goals of Bar Method and you really start to see results in just a couple of weeks. Check out the Firm Your Body Collection that includes the Super Sculpting and Change Your Body DVDs, the Bar Method Ball (essential for chiseling the inner thighs) and a bottle of Nutra-Lift’s Daily Seaweed Cellulite Cream.

Lather 10-Minute Brightening Mask With Glycolic ($28 in the shop). You will notice as you digilently follow Burr Leonard’s movements (see above) that her arms have an amazingly smooth sheen. They look as if they have had a salon peel and that gave me an idea: a good glycolic exfoliator shouldn’t just be limited to the face. Lather’s generous 4-oz tub and decent price makes it realistic to work on smoothing out visible (arms and décolleté) or excessively wrinkly areas (such as knees). As well as glycolic, there’s a hefty dose of niacinamide, for improving skin elasticity. I am really pleased with my off-label use of Lather’s mask as a body peel! Read the full review.

Mukti Pink Grapefruit Hand & Body Lotion ($35 in the shop). This a refreshing and nourishing body lotion. The base is aloe vera juice which, when used topically, can soothe skin and serve as an anti-inflammatory. Following that, there is an abundance of oils (macadamia ternifolia, coconut, glycerin), an oil derivative (cetearyl glucoside), and butters (cocoa and shea butyrospermum parkii). I highly approve of the macadamia 22% of it is omega 7, a fatty acid. High in phosphoros and calcium, macadamia also contains phenolic compounds that are antioxidant. Read Nisha’s review.

Retrospect Feet, Knees & Elbows ($38 in the shop). The knees are the first to go, followed by the elbows. For a younger body, we need to give them the attention they deserve. Retrospect’s lotion is lightweight and not remotely gunky or greasy. It smooths and soothes, and lasts all day. Feet like it too – so much that you can put off a pedicure. The key active is a complex of keratin. Retrospect combines three types of keratin – oxidized keratin, intact keratin proteins and keratin peptides – on the grounds that they have different functions. Read Emily’s review.

Prana Attar Firming Body Milk (8oz/$28 in the shop). You don’t need cellulite to enjoy this product, but if you do have it you’ll get a kick out of one of the key actives. The anti-cellulite ingredient is glaucine (from poppies) and it “empties” lipid filled adipocytes in your body and they become more fibroblast-like and capable of synthesizing and secreting cellulite. There are plenty of other useful ingredients, including niacinamide, phospholipids (an antioxidant that retains moisture), and red, green and white tea extracts. Cellulite or not, this body lotion is lightweight and leaves skin looking supple. Read the full review.

Hi Valerie, that sounds like a really good idea. We haven't tested Arcona Pumpkin body lotion yet, which is why it isn't in the shop. But we are following up on your thought and ordering a tester.

Marta, thanks so much! I love this roundup. Great ideas all -- I especially like the suggestion to use glycolic on arms, etc and will definitely try the Lather mask. You've really got me focused on treatments for my neglected body -- thanks!
