Five Best lip plumpers 2010

December 14, 2010 Reviewed by Marta 19 Comments
It has been a year since we mouthed off about our favorite lip plumpers and since then we have embraced some new products such as Hydropeptide’s lip plumper ($38) and discovered some new brands such as KaplanMD. Many of us in the TIA community have fallen for KaplanMD's Lip 20 Treatment ($30 and now in the TIA shop). We are also devotees of Your Best Face Define. Jane Iredale continues to find a place in my purse and we remain loyal to value for money Skinn 3X. Sure there's instant gratification, but our lip plumpers are chosen more for their long term effects on our lips and surrounding fine lines.

Hydropeptide’s lip plumper ($38). What you really want from a lip plumper is to have your cake and eat it: short term gratification with long-term antiaging. Hydropeptide pushes your pout with citrus, capsicum and mint. The texture is neither too sticky nor too wet, and the color is a natural pink without overdoing the shine factor. Your lips will appear noticeably fuller and smoother – at least temporarily. Longer term, your lips will thank you for Tripeptide-29, which builds and repairs collagen, which would fill out thin lips and fill in the cracked skin of damaged lips. According to Hydropeptide, the plumping effect lasts even longer than that. Independent studies over an 8-week period involving thirty-six women ages 21 to 65 showed both immediate and long-term results. Within 10 minutes, 97% saw smoother-looking lips, while 100% indicated that their lips felt fully hydrated. Within 5 weeks, 100% said that their lips were healthier and 89% younger-looking. With the exception of BHT, nearly all of Hydropeptide’s ingredients have a very good safety profile.

KaplanMD Lip Treatment 20. The first thing to say about Kaplan MD Lip 20 is that it does plump the lips. Mine are thinner than a snake’s when left to their own devices, but with Lip 20 they look pleasantly full, darker and smooth. This is a look I could get used to. No humble lip plumper, Lip 20 Treatment has rather a lot going on. FIrst, I’ll deal with the fact that it comes in a couple of colors as well as completely sheer. The plumping job is achieved by sodium hyaluronate in the form of patented molecules that easily penetrate the skin. Hyaluronate’s moisturizing power is backed up by shea butter and squalane. Another important ingredient is seabuckthorn (hippophae rhamnoides), which has loads of quercetin. You’ll also find KaplanMD’s signature ingredient black cohosh.

Your Best Face Define ($70). Truth in Aging VIPs tested the first prototype of this lip cream and what has finally hit the streets has some serious antiagers, including two peptides that might give the mighty Matrixyl a run for its money. Syncoll is a small peptide with a unique sequence to mimic the human body’s own mechanism to produce collagen via TGF-?, tissue growth factor. It is in good company with Syn-tacks, which stimulates a broad spectrum of things responsible for youthful skin:  laminin V, collagen types IV, VII and XVII and integrin  all at once. And of course, no YBF product would be complete without a smattering of the radical scavenger, spin trap, and new favorite, lipochroman-6.

Skinn Lip 3X Volumizing Serum ($29.50).  It goes to work immediately to plump up lips (and the wrinkles on and directly around the lips), but you’ll see a cumulative effect after using it for more than a month. That is likely due to the addition of super peptide Matrixyl (MaxiLip), which is a strong collagen stimulating ingredient.  The Skinn Lip Serum tastes great (it contains peppermint oil and flavoring), stays put for a impressively long time, smoothes on nicely and leaves lips moist, full and rose colored.

Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip Plumper ($24). I don’t want to put any nasty chemicals anywhere near my mouth where they could be ingested. Not only does this lip volumizer do no evil, it might actually do some good. It has avocado oil, a peptide, shea butter, green tea (a proven anti-oxidant), cranberry, vitamin C and E. It even has the powerful anti-aging antioxidant Matrixyl (palmitoyl oligopeptide). Mint and ginger are supposed to do the plumping job. It does create a tingling sensation, but not unpleasantly so and the pout lasts a few hours. The colors are nice too (I use NYC).

Ingredients in Jane Iredale

Triisostearyl Citrate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Beeswax, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Flavor, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Tribehenin, Sorbitan Isostearate, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, May Contain (+/-): Mica (CI 77019), Iron Oxides (CI 77489, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Carmine (CI 75470).

Skinn Lip 3x Volumizing Serum ingredients:

I think so. They make the lips so soft and yes, I think a little plumper. They are my absolutly favorite lip product right now. I like the red the best, but I do enjoy the variety. They are all so nice. I like the small sizes to carry with me. I don't feel I need a liner while using these. They are just incredible...the look and feel. Still would like to find a plumper that makes my lips really look lots plumper, but this will be it till I do.
Thanks for sharing your great findings with us, Marta.
And yes, when I run out of these, I will be buying more!

    Marta, that helps!
Yes, I won't do the surgery thing either. What I am looking for in a lip plumper
Is something that will add volumes of moisture. If I don't constantly
and I mean constanly add moisture to my lips, they get so dry, severly dry,
That they actually swell....not good. I don't want that kind of swelling. I just want soft moisturized lips. The more moisture, the better. I have figured out that some lip plumpers will actually add moisture and that is what I am looking for.
I appreciate your time to help answer our questions. I also agree with you on the antiaging ingredients. That is high on my list, also.

Hi Sean, of these plumpers, you could go for YBF Define or Hydropeptide - no color, no shimmer.

L, the Jane Iredale plumps a little. But I need to manage your expectations. Really, they all only plump a little and briefly. The most antiaging ingredients, the more they help collagen production and further thinning over time. But there is no magic bullet for thin lips - apart from injectable fillers and, although my lips are thinner than a snakes, I'm not going there.

Does the Jane Iredale really plump?

Hi Marta - I'm curious if any of the 5 best lip plumpers might be appropriate for (some of us courageous) men? I guess I'm asking which would be the least noticeable (i.e sticky and shiny)?

I use Blistex Deep Renewal because my lips get dried out very easily, but now I'm also noticing lines around my 40ish year old, thin-lipped mouth.

I have been using Hydropeptide Lip treatment and am pleasantly surprised. Having a weakness in the lip, vermillion border area, I clearly KNOW when a product is "doing something". Hydropeptide truly works!! I would love to try these new possibilities to determine what they can offer to "challenged" LIPS!!

I have been an enthusiastic user of one of your previously recommended 5 best lip plumpers by "Be Fine". It was an EXCELLENT product, but I can no longer find a supplier with stock. It looked attractive requiring no extra lip gloss or colour coverage, provided plenty of moisture to my chronically dry lips - lasting several hours between food and drink intakes, and it definitely added plump to my lips. I would be delighted to test and compare either of these 2 new lip plumping products.

    Hi Marta,

I would love to try either the Skin Nutrition or the Intelligent Nutrients lip plumpers and write a review.

I've been using BE's Buxom Lip Glosses for a few years now, and while I love the tingling sensation they provide as well as the glossy color, I don't find they have any plumping effect at all.

After reading the review on TIA, I have been using KaplanMD's Lip 20 Treatment in Clear and again, I don't find any plumping effects, but I do like the moisturizing properties and the sun protection.

I would LOVE to try these lip plumpers. I've yet to find something for my lips that doesn't ultimately dry them out. Does it even exist? Would love to try and let y'all know.

I'd welcome an opportunity to test this product. I've become an avid reader of TIA, and I trust the comments and recommendations here more than anywhere else. I've tried a number of products because of these trials and reports, and I have plans to try other products and services as well. I'd love to contribute my own findings, 'give back', so to speak. I've become a product junkie, thanks to TIA. I have a strong sense of thrift, but it's become clear to me that you get what you pay for. I'm pleased that TIA tests products no matter their price, and I've found some really good options that fit my budget. I've been surprised to learn about what might be considered high-end products that give low-end results. It's great to have TIA in my back-pocket; the samples I've received have been great to test out, and they clearly hold up to reports on TIA, such as YBF's Correct.
