It has been a year since we mouthed off about our favorite lip plumpers and since then we have embraced some new products such as Hydropeptide’s lip plumper ($38) and discovered some new brands such as KaplanMD. Many of us in the TIA community have fallen for KaplanMD's Lip 20 Treatment ($30 and now in the TIA shop). We are also devotees of Your Best Face Define. Jane Iredale continues to find a place in my purse and we remain loyal to value for money Skinn 3X. Sure there's instant gratification, but our lip plumpers are chosen more for their long term effects on our lips and surrounding fine lines.

Hydropeptide’s lip plumper ($38). What you really want from a lip plumper is to have your cake and eat it: short term gratification with long-term antiaging. Hydropeptide pushes your pout with citrus, capsicum and mint. The texture is neither too sticky nor too wet, and the color is a natural pink without overdoing the shine factor. Your lips will appear noticeably fuller and smoother – at least temporarily. Longer term, your lips will thank you for Tripeptide-29, which builds and repairs collagen, which would fill out thin lips and fill in the cracked skin of damaged lips. According to Hydropeptide, the plumping effect lasts even longer than that. Independent studies over an 8-week period involving thirty-six women ages 21 to 65 showed both immediate and long-term results. Within 10 minutes, 97% saw smoother-looking lips, while 100% indicated that their lips felt fully hydrated. Within 5 weeks, 100% said that their lips were healthier and 89% younger-looking. With the exception of BHT, nearly all of Hydropeptide’s ingredients have a very good safety profile.

KaplanMD Lip Treatment 20. The first thing to say about Kaplan MD Lip 20 is that it does plump the lips. Mine are thinner than a snake’s when left to their own devices, but with Lip 20 they look pleasantly full, darker and smooth. This is a look I could get used to. No humble lip plumper, Lip 20 Treatment has rather a lot going on. FIrst, I’ll deal with the fact that it comes in a couple of colors as well as completely sheer. The plumping job is achieved by sodium hyaluronate in the form of patented molecules that easily penetrate the skin. Hyaluronate’s moisturizing power is backed up by shea butter and squalane. Another important ingredient is seabuckthorn (hippophae rhamnoides), which has loads of quercetin. You’ll also find KaplanMD’s signature ingredient black cohosh.

Your Best Face Define ($70). Truth in Aging VIPs tested the first prototype of this lip cream and what has finally hit the streets has some serious antiagers, including two peptides that might give the mighty Matrixyl a run for its money. Syncoll is a small peptide with a unique sequence to mimic the human body’s own mechanism to produce collagen via TGF-?, tissue growth factor. It is in good company with Syn-tacks, which stimulates a broad spectrum of things responsible for youthful skin:  laminin V, collagen types IV, VII and XVII and integrin  all at once. And of course, no YBF product would be complete without a smattering of the radical scavenger, spin trap, and new favorite, lipochroman-6.

Skinn Lip 3X Volumizing Serum ($29.50).  It goes to work immediately to plump up lips (and the wrinkles on and directly around the lips), but you’ll see a cumulative effect after using it for more than a month. That is likely due to the addition of super peptide Matrixyl (MaxiLip), which is a strong collagen stimulating ingredient.  The Skinn Lip Serum tastes great (it contains peppermint oil and flavoring), stays put for a impressively long time, smoothes on nicely and leaves lips moist, full and rose colored.

Jane Iredale Just Kissed Lip Plumper ($24). I don’t want to put any nasty chemicals anywhere near my mouth where they could be ingested. Not only does this lip volumizer do no evil, it might actually do some good. It has avocado oil, a peptide, shea butter, green tea (a proven anti-oxidant), cranberry, vitamin C and E. It even has the powerful anti-aging antioxidant Matrixyl (palmitoyl oligopeptide). Mint and ginger are supposed to do the plumping job. It does create a tingling sensation, but not unpleasantly so and the pout lasts a few hours. The colors are nice too (I use NYC).
