Natural nugget of native copper

Hippocrates is said to have prescribed copper compounds to treat diseases in 400 B.C., but to this day scientists are still discovering how copper — a natural element of our bodies — functions. We do know that some of our enzymes (proteins) are copper-dependent, such as one for cellular energy and another that is responsible for cross-linking collagen and elastin. Copper peptides are also helpful for boosting hair growth and stronger strands (hence why it is the key active in my Truth Vitality Advanced Complex).

Copper peptides are one of my favorite anti-aging ingredients, but they are difficult and expensive to formulate with. My search for good skin care products with copper peptides has been painstaking (read slow) over the past years. I have recently made some new finds, so the Truth In Aging copper stash finally warrants a new Five Best. In fact, I was a tad spoiled for choice. After some agonizing over what to choose, here is my 2016 list of Five Best with Copper Peptides.

  • Ao Skincare Restore Serum

Ao Skincare Restore Serum ($119.95 in the shop). I am excited by new find Ao Skincare, which is backed by a New Zealand doctor. Along with indigenous plants, Ao formulates with heavy hitters in interesting combinations. In Restore Serum, you will find copper peptides and the impressive free radical scavenger, spin trap. It is probably a first for combining the two. The formula isn’t as long as your arm (a relief sometimes), but packs a lot in with niacinamide, an anti-wrinkle and firming peptide called SNAP-8, gylcosaminoglycans, and New Zealand goodies like Manuka honey and tree fern.
  • Deciem Niod Copper Amino Isolate

Deciem NIOD Copper Amino Isolate. Deciem NIOD’s copper serum comes in two strengths, 1% ($60 in the shop) and 5% ($200 in the shop). What makes NIOD’s face serum neat is that it packages the copper tripeptide-1 part of the formula separately and you mix it with what they call an activator, a copper salt from two more amino acids. Even 1% is worthwhile since research has been conducted at 0.68% and produced results on inflammation. The formula also has s myristoyl nonapeptide-3, a peptide that is said to mimic retinol and exfoliate the skin in order to encourage cell turnover.
  • E'shee Clinical Esthetic Cellular Repairing Night Cream

E'shee Cellular Repairing Night Cream ($289 in the shop). This is truly a cutting-edge anti-aging treatment. Its advanced formula contains two gene therapy peptides: FGF1 protein, which triggers stem cell rejuvenation, and TIMP2 gene, which inhibits the enzymes that accelerate the aging process, as well as protecting collagen fibers. Copper is included with other minerals like magnesium, zinc and calcium.
  • Medik8 Firewall

Medik8 Firewall ($145 in the shop). Medik8 has its devotees who report being on their fourth or fifth bottles. I like the comment made by one community member, John, who said he only had to look at the difference on his left hand where he mixed the product before applying to see its power. This brings me Medik8’s approach to the challenge of formulating with copper: a dual chamber bottle that simultaneously pumps the serum and the copper complex, to then be mixed on the back of the hand. As well as copper, there’s Matrixyl 3000, the free radical neutralizer Lipochroman-6 and niacinamide.
  • Benir Beauty BV Nine Platinum Anti-Aging Bee Venom Cream

Benir Beauty BV Nine Platinum Anti-Aging Bee Venom Cream ($136 in the shop). With copper peptides and bee venom, Benir’s anti-aging cream had me at hello. That was a few years ago, but it has stood the test of time with a formula that is unique and advanced. Firming as well as line reducing, this serum also has several antioxidants and collagen-boosting co-enzyme Q-10.
