When I am asked if anti-aging skin care really works, I say look for products with epidermal growth factors (EGF). These powerful anti-agers are the key actives in some of the very best serums that I have discovered. Growth factors, or cytokines, are naturally occurring proteins that stimulate cells to go forth and multiply and differentiate themselves from other cells. Growth factors bind to specific receptors on the cell surfaces. Here is my 2014 Five Best with growth factors; they all, in my experience, give excellent results.
E’shee KI Therapy Serum - Elixir of Life
E’shee KI Therapy Serum - Elixir of Life ($189 in the shop) is one of my best finds ever; it combines growth factors (FGF 1 peptide) and Far Infrared Powder (FIR). E’shee says it encourages the body's own stem cells to repair damaged tissue and regenerate the skin. And there is research from Japan showing that FIR works to encourage the body’s TGF-β1 growth factor. The FGF 1 peptide is E’shee’s signature growth factor, and studies have shown it to boost collagen and inhibit sun damage. Certainly, it does wonders for my skin.
AQ Skin Solutions Active Serum
AQ Skin Solutions Active Serum ($149 for 1oz in the shop). AQ is all about growth factors – listed as human fibroblast conditioned media. The AQ facial serum has a concentration of 42% of growth factors. It is quite a cocktail and AQ says that it uses a “cell sorting technology” to ensure that the formula only includes growth factors that are beneficial to the skin. The rest of the formula is simple: a couple of vitamins, lactic acid and glycerin. Quite simply, it works.
Amarte Eyeconic Eye Cream
Amarte Eyeconic Eye Cream ($55 in the shop) comes from a brand that uses a nano-encapsulated epidermal growth factor. This makes the EGF more stable and efficient at penetrating the skin. This is important in a formula that also has exfoliating retinol. Although Eyeconic’s retinol is at a 3.8% concentration, this product is gentle enough for the delicate eye area. If you have been looking for an eye cream with retinol and growth factors, Eyeconic is it.
Michael Todd Knu Anti-Aging Face Lift Serum
Michael Todd Knu Anti-Aging Face Lift Serum ($75) hedges its bets by bolstering the epidermal growth factor with a slew of anti-aging heavy hitters: Matrixyl 3000, syn-coll, DMAE, alpha hydroxy acid, peptides, arbutin and L-Arginine. Expect instant gratification as well as long term results.
Medik8 Growth Factor Youth Activating Serum
Medik8 Growth Factor Youth Activating Serum ($160 in the shop). The growth factor is sh-Oligopeptide-1, bioidentical to human EGF, but synthetically produced - hence, the pre-fix SH (synthetic human). This is basically all there is to this pared back but potent formula. I find that I gravitate towards it for the deeper and more stubborn wrinkles.
