We thought it was about time to compile everything Folligen ($22 in the TIA shop) related into one easy how-to, so you’d get the 411 on everything from application to ingredients to what you can hope to see as results. Plus, community members pipe in with their own Folligen experiences.

What is it? Folligen is a copper peptide treatment (in the form of a cream, lotion and spray) for helping hair grow – whether thinning or aging hair on the head, sparse eyelashes or moth-eaten eyebrows.

How does it work? Copper peptides‘ ability to assist in hair growth was discovered when it was noticed that the hair follicles around treated wounds were exceptionally large. It seems to work on the follicle in two ways: increasing follicle cell proliferation increased follicle size; and copper also decreases programmed follicle cell death that ultimately stops human hair growth. Copper peptides also act to simulate the capillaries and studies have shown that they help human follicles switch from the dormant telogen state into the hair-growing anagen state. However, it does seem that you have to keep using this product for it to continue to work.

How is it used? According to Skin Biology (the maker), the turquoise colored lotion is best for use within areas of existing thinning hair, and the cream is best for use on hairlines. Since Skin Biology doesn’t provide their own set of instructions on the bottle, here are some step-by-step instructions on how to best use this product:

Rub it into the scalp – either all over or just where needed. It does not stain your hair or make your skin turquoise. Use it after washing and before drying the hair, as it rubs in much more easily if the skin is damp. Skin Biology recommends using it every three or four days at first to ensure it doesn’t irritate. As you build up a tolerance, you can increase it to every other day and then every day over a period of, say, 10 days.

To apply Folligen to your eyebrows, dip your pinkie or a Q-tip in the mouth of the bottle until it is coated. Then, trace a precise line where you are pining for a bushier brow.

Disclaimer: More liquid does not lead to longer lashes. If you use Folligen sparingly, just as you would liquid eyeliner, you should experience no irritation and gradual lash growth.

What can be used with Folligen to further promote hair growth? Emu oil is a clear non-greasy liquid similar to human sebum that promotes hair growth and re-growth. Rub it into the scalp or brows before using Folligen (as often as you use Folligen) or on its own.

Highlights (from the TIA community):

Ines said: “I have been using Folligen as a part of my morning routine for a month in my eyelashes and I have to say WOW! it really works! My eyelashes are so thick and loooooooong. this is one of the best products ever and you cant beat the price, uh?”

Pam said: “I have been using Folligen on my brows, and they have been growing more hair.”

Jean said: “WOW! Folligen has worked on my eyelashes and has worked fast!! I’ve gone from almost NO lashes (which are very fine, too) to several rows of lashes in such a short amount of time no one would believe me- I would not believe it if I didn’t see it for myself! Can’t wait to see what they look like in a month or so. There is a caveat-I apply a tiny amount of lotion along the eyelash line with a tiny brush, but it tingles/burns so after 15 minutes I run water over my eyelids to remove the excess- I figure it has absorbed enough to do the trick! This is truly amazing!”

Complaints (from the TIA community):

Kathy said: “I used Folligen on my eyelashes for more than 2 months and saw no results. I guess it doesn’t work for everyone.”

Donna said: “I am frustrated because it has been almost two months and I barely see any difference on my brows.

Although Marta says that Folligen has never stained her blonde hair, Bethany said: “I am currently trying Folligen for Blondes since the blue copper peptides in the Folligen Spray added a slight blue tinge to a highlighted blonde streak in my hair.”
