How Safe is My Makeup Case

December 10, 2009 Reviewed by admin 2 Comments
Truth be told, I'm a makeup junkie. When I get out my admittedly enormous makeup case in the morning, I never reach for a brush, liner, or lip gloss with subtlety in mind. However, when choosing products to put on, I am easily swayed by words like "organic," "all-natural," and "dermatologist tested," although I'm not always diligent about investigating what these claims actually mean. Since coming to Truth in Aging just a few weeks ago, I've felt increasingly curious about just what I'm putting on my face each day and what the possible repercussions might be.  Here's the breakdown of what I'm wearing today and a description of the ingredients I'm not too thrilled to be sporting:

bareMinerals Original SPF 15 Foundation and bareMinerals Warm Radiance

I've been using bareMinerals' foundation for about four years now and I have noticed a marked improvement in my complexion since ditching my liquid foundation. Bare Escentuals, the company that created bareMinerals, has won multiple awards for their natural makeup, but, despite all of the hoopla, there are a few ingredients in their products that may be cause for concern. The first of these questionable components is bismuth oxychloride, a lead and copper byproduct which can cause skin irritation, itching, and even cystic acne, when applied in large doses. Although Bare Escentuals offers a wide range of finishing powders to accompany their foundations, I find that when used alone, the foundation provides natural-looking, even coverage, and I haven't experienced any irritation. Bare Escentuals has also made PETA's list of cruelty-free companies.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

Much to my chagrin, despite everything I've tried, my adult skin is still quite oily. The issue is not only limited to my t-zone, but extends, strangely enough, to my eyelids, causing my eye makeup to move quite a lot during the day. The only thing I've found that has allowed me to keep my makeup in place is Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion, which works so well, I could write love poems to it.  The primer, which has been voted a top beauty pick by Sephora shoppers, does contain quite a few troublesome ingredients, including cyclopentasiloxane, a known eye irritant. Another ingredient, sorbitan sesquioleate, caused allergic reactions in almost ten percent of a test group.
Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! Mascara

Tarte's dermatologist-tested Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara is a dye-free, fragrance-free, talc-free lash volumizing formula that comes in recyclable "green  packaging." Most of the ingredients in this lash-plumper are benign are benign, but it contains chlorphenesin, an organic compound known to cause irritation and contact dermatitis. Pregnant women and young children are advised against using products containing this ingredient. The mascara's ingredient list also includes phenoxyethanol, which can be extremely irritating to both the skin and eyes, and can be dangerous if inhaled or ingested.

Physicians Formula Baked Sands Wet/Dry Eyeshadow

Physicians Formula, founded in 1937, has created an extensive line of hypoallergenic makeup, much of which is derived from mineral formulas. The company's Baked Sands Eyeshadow, which is not part of the mineral collection, contains irritants bismuth oxychloride, phenoxyethanol,  and methylparaben, butylparaben, and propylparaben, which have been linked to skin irritation and environmental damage.

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen

Since my makeup has a tendency to move around after a long day, I'm always happy to find long-lasting makeup that doesn't dry out my skin. I've been happily using Revlon's Colorstay products since they arrived on the market a few years ago. Revlon's Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen, one of their newer products, contains sodium laureth sulfate, a less irritating version of sodium lauryl sulfate, a known cause of contact dermatitis. This formula also contains polysorbate 80, an eye irritant that has been proven to cause reproductive effects in animals and, in one case, when given intravenously, death.

Thank You for your write-up!!!!! It was very helpful. I have been using bare minerals for 6 years. I just ordered the mascara and now I will be returning it. Thank You so much, I am on a mission to find good ingredient products from now on! I have been doing that for years, but now I am much more serious about it. God Bless!
