I have never been a real makeup wearer and always felt wonderful in my natural skin (with the added bonus of mascara and lip gloss). Those days have long gone and now the first thing I notice in the mirror is the dull, uneven skin tone I carelessly developed. Needless to say, I was delighted to be chosen to review the Dare to Try product, HydroPeptide Even Out Brightening Pigment Corrector ($60). When it first arrived, my skin and I were at war and I waited a bit till things settled down. I so greatly appreciate all the honest reviews from the TIA community and, in return, I wanted to provide the most accurate information I could about this product.

Before using the product, I checked the HydroPeptide website for information and found that Even Out relies on two actives to target dark spots: B-White and ChromaBright, bolstered by lactic acid and resveratrol.

The bottle itself adds that Even Out “safely lightens all types of pigmentation, including age spots, sun damage, acne scars, and pregnancy mask.” It referenced a study, which found that after 60 days Even Out reduced melasma in participants by 72% and sunspots by 67%; 100% of study participants reported having lightened skin.

Sounded good to me!

Now I was getting really excited and imagining my skin with its youthful even tone! The product directions simply say to use an ample amount after washing, so I contacted the company to see if there was more I needed to know. An account executive at HydroPeptide kindly responded with this email: “Dear Lori, Thank you for your interest in HydroPeptide. Even Out must be used twice a day, everyday for maximum results. It is recommended underneath additional moisturizer but can be mixed with other serums to reduce regimen steps. Results can be seen in as early as 8 weeks but improve with time.”

I was officially ready to banish my dark spots and enjoy my new brighter complexion! Feeling courageous, especially given that my oily summer skin was about to emerge and take over, I decided to stop using all other products (except my cleanser), so that I would be able to attribute any success in banishing these spots to HydroPeptide’s Even Out.

Let me back up and share that my skin is now 56 years young, very oily in the summer and somewhat dry in the winter. I continue to fight off acne breakouts, which I still keep hoping I’ll “outgrow.” My skin reacts poorly to many products other TIA members have raved about – lots of money wasted on what seem to be wonderful products for someone else’s skin. So I am always anxious when I try a new product.

Even Out is a thin, white cream with a pleasant odor. My first impression was that it didn’t seem to be easily absorbed by my skin. I chose to use it on half of my face, so I could have a clear comparison. After about four weeks of use, I could no longer deal with my skin needing some familiar TLC and added my favorite Cosmetic Skin Solutions Vitamin C + E Serum back into the routine. It never fails me, and this time was no different – skin rescued. Six weeks into the trial, noticing no changes to the Even Out side of my face, I used a spa gift certificate that was about to expire toward a facial. I don’t get facials often and had never had one with the products that were used. Two interesting things happened: First, the esthetician, unaware of my ongoing research, commented that one side of my face seemed much drier than the other – yes, it was the Even Out side. Second, when I looked in the mirror at home I noticed my biggest problem spot was considerably lighter! My first reaction was joy, quickly followed by anguish that I had just messed with the results of my test! Now with a tiny bit of doubt in my mind as to what worked to lighten that spot, I proceeded to faithfully use Even Out on half of my face.

Without dragging this review on too long, let me summarize the rest by saying – a few weeks later, I traveled through Italy for three weeks with nothing but a carry-on suitcase; space was at a premium so only “can’t live without it” products came along; Even Out was left behind. Well, the hot Italian sun caught me without enough SPF in my products and I returned with that darn spot as brown as ever. Since I now had not fully completed the 60 days HydroPeptide suggests is needed to see results before my trip, I started the trial over again. Not only was I really hoping to find the potion that would allow me to feel proud of my makeup-free skin, I had also longed to be the TIA member to deliver the glorious news to all devoted followers – dreams of being exalted a hero in our quest for brighter skin danced in my head!

And now, sadly, after all this I can only say one thing: After another 12 weeks of devoted use twice a day, HydroPeptide Even Out Brightening Pigment Corrector did nothing. The good news for me is that it did nothing evil either.

We all know in skincare that one person’s disappointment might be another’s glory, but for this 56-years-young face, I’m heading straight back for that facial and this time I’m returning with the names of her products!
