Illamasqua makeup comes to the US

October 13, 2009 Reviewed by Marta 0 Comments
Illamasqua, the cool cult, UK brand favored by Sienna Miller, is now inviting Americans to channel their inner night vixen. Rightly coveted for the amazing range of color ways, from pure pigment to the truly original  palette of eyeshadows and lipsticks that defy you to fail to find THE shade for you, Illamasqua has launched at Sephora.

Although they are just what every party girl needs, Illamasqua's true colors show up in the ingredients. There's nothing to like about Illamasque's ingredients, but that's OK - after all, they aren't positioned as green or makeup that's good for you. It is strictly war paint and the question is whether there is anything in this brand's products that you should avoid.

Looking at the lipsticks ($20), I have seen worse. Those with sensitive skins may react to the mineral oil, carmine or polyethelene. The only truly bad ingredient is calcium aluminum borosilicate, a bulking agent that could be potentially carcinogenic.

The eyeshadows present more of an issue (or two). First up is talc, a potential carcinogen that cancer organizations want to see banned from cosmetics. Amongst the colors, there is chromium hydroxide green, which the FDA has only approved for products not intended for the lips. Mineral oil is a potential irritant and there is carmine again. Apart from that it is down to the parabens, which are irritants and xenoestrogens that are associated with cancer.

All in all a mixed makeup bag.
