Interview with Airelle Founder Kasey Drapeau D’Amato

Airelle’s mission is to fill a void in the skincare and antiaging regimens of many of Hollywood’s celebrities, models, aestheticians and makeup artists. The Airelle line of natural products is created to protect skin from environmental damage and aging, while holding up under a high def camera. I sat down with founder Kasey Drapeau D’Amato, an aesthetic dermatology, Physician Assistant, to learn more about Airelle's unique approach.

Let’s start from the beginning. How did you end up in the skin care industry?

KDD: As an aesthetic dermatology PA in Los Angeles for the past 15 years, I developed an interest in skin care; people don't realize that what you put on your skin does get absorbed into your body. So many people use petroleum based products on their skin - that's like eating gasoline! I found myself spending most of my days educating the public about topical skin care and I started getting pressure from my husband who works on the set of major TV shows because celebrities and makeup artists were also seeking my advice on clean and effective skin care.  Sure there are some products out there that are good, but they were missing one fundamental ingredient or another. After 5 years of research I set out to develop a truly clean and highly effective skin care that was powerful enough that others in the medical community could feel confident that there was a clean and natural alternative to harsh products on the market today.

What motivated you to start Airelle? And what inspired the name?

KDD: I am passionate about antioxidants, especially in skin care. Antioxidants provide so many benefits to the skin but my particular interest is in the ability of antioxidants to be "photo-protective" which means that the right kind of antioxidant can help to protect from environmental radiation and help to prevent wrinkles from forming. I love the power of blueberry as an antioxidant so I researched the most powerful species and developed an antioxidant compound based on the blueberry called Berrimatrix. The name "Airelle" is actually a French translation to the word "berry" because I love the power of the berry!

What have you found to be some of the beauty industry's greatest challenges?

KDD: The beauty industry is cluttered with so many products and it is very difficult for the average consumer to be truly educated and not a victim of marketing jargon.  I am a big believer in research and science and one of my goals is to educate society on how to differentiate real scientific research compared to marketing jargon. There are great products out there; you just have to know how to see through the fog to find them.

Lots of products have fruit and plant-derived antioxidants. What’s different about Berrimatrix?

KDD: Berrimatrix is a completely innovative ingredient. In 2017, it was written about in the medical journal Drugs in Dermatology for its photo-protective benefits. The reason that The Journal of Drugs In Dermatology wrote about Berrimatrix along with the latest innovative dermatology prescription products is because it was shown to have the ability to slow down the breakdown of collagen from environmental radiation, particularly IR-A radiation. This special ability can actually help slow the onset of wrinkle formation. Other skin care may offer some visible benefits but are missing the fundamental "protection" or "preservation" aspect. Berrimatrix has a 2-in-1 benefit because it will improve the skin quality AND help support collagen integrity which makes the skin look better AND helps to slow the signs of aging.

What is your favorite Airelle product?

KDD: I LOVE the Age Defying Facial Serum. It is lightweight but power-packed full of high performance ingredients. It absorbs quickly and will help improve appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, help reduce appearance of pore size, and celebrity makeup artists love it as a make-up primer. I apply it morning and night and it makes my skin look flawless and amazing.

Anything new in the pipeline for the line?

KDD: There are so many exciting things in the pipeline for Airelle. We are a young brand and there is a ton in store for the future. I can't reveal too much just yet but check back in a few months and I might be able to give you some sneak peaks into what the future has in store for the first clean and naturally derived skin care to be recognized by the US medical community!
