IT Cosmetics Brow Power Perfector
I’ve been actively fighting the intrinsic and extrinsic effects of aging on every front but some things are (annoyingly) inevitable. I’ve noticed my eyebrows have slowly become sparser over the last year. I don’t test many color products, but I couldn’t resist checking out IT Cosmetics Brow Power Perfector 5-in-1 Powder Gel Pencil ($24). Brow Power Perfector has become a daily obsession and I’m finding I can’t leave my apartment without applying it.

Brow Power Perfector is an upgrade to IT’s Brow Power pencil (which I haven’t tried), available in one universal shade. Everything about the gel pencil seems to have been well thought-out, from shade selection to packaging. The Perfector’s 5-in-1 gel-pencil replaces five products: brow pencil, fill-in powder, taming brow gel, brow-enhancing treatment conditioner, and brow brush.

I didn’t previously use, or even know I needed all five products but now that I have them all in one super-easy-to-use pencil, I can’t imagine life without them. The Perfector glides on like butter, so it is easy to use soft, feathery strokes to shape brows. The opposite end of the pencil has a spooly brush that I wasn’t sure I liked, as it really resembles a mascara wand. However, it does a fairly good job of smoothing down flyaways and making brows look natural and polished. Be sure to brush through brows quickly as this gel pencil sets within a couple of minutes to a smudge-proof and waterproof finish that lasts.

The formulation is a powder in gel suspension infused with effective conditioning ingredients like nettle leaf and hydrolyzed silk, which prevents hair from becoming dry and brittle. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a natural metabolite in the human body, is responsible for shrinking the hair follicle (think wispy). Perfector contains saw palmetto and tea extracts, which have been shown to inhibit the enzyme responsible for conversion of testosterone to DHT. Besides saw palmetto, the formula contains biotin and grape seed extract, also strongly associated with hair growth. There is also horsetail flower extract which has hair-strengthening properties.

The gel pencil is available in four shades: auburn (for strawberry blonds or redheads), blond (for light to medium blonds), dark brown (my shade) and universal taupe (if you’re dark blond, light brown, gray, silver, salt and pepper). The cap is air-tight to prevent the gel-powder formulation from drying out; you can even hear a pop as you remove the cap. I like that a nifty sharpener is included with the pencil. Also enclosed are instructions with a diagram to help you achieve the perfect brow. Brows can be challenging to fill in and achieve perfect symmetry – especially since I’m always rushing out the door. IT Cosmetics Brow Power Perfector is a breeze to use – just be sure to keep the pencil sharp and feather it on lightly for budge-proof brows.
