I have always been a fan of Jack Black. I prefer this men's grooming brand over other big names, like ZIRH and Anthony for Men. So when Jack Black discontinued their Sun Guard Ultra-Light Spray Sunscreen, I was a little bummed and maybe resistant to the replacement: Jack Black Oil-Free Sun Guard Very Water Resistant Sunscreen SPF 45. It's just not the same.

Jack Black's former sunscreen, Sun Guard Ultra-Light Sunscreen, was a nice product, even though it had little avobenzone (only 3 percent) in addition to other sunscreen agents. I was a fan of the natural citronella, lemongrass and spearmint, all of which help repel insects, so it was a two-for-one product for me when I go to sunny and buggy destinations. Jack Black Oil-Free Sun Guard Very Water Resistant Sunscreen SPF 45 is a totally different story.

While Jack Black upped the SPF and upped their game by adding zinc oxide—one of few agents that offer full UVA and UVA broad-spectrum protection—as the primary sunscreen agent (8 percent), they dropped the insect repellers and added some chemicals. Sort of a bummer, as sunscreens with ingredients that potentially cause skin cancer is a hot topic these days. There's some good stuff here, like Vitamin A and Vitamin C, both of which fight free radicals. There's also some great herbal extracts, like calendula flower extract known to heal and sooth. However, there are also some fairly toxic ingredients, most of which make up the rest of the product.

I'm hoping, because this product is relatively new on the market, the team behind Jack Black will realize they can do much, much better. Granted, when I tried the Oil-Free Sun Guard Very Water Resistant Sunscreen SPF 45, it wasn't oily (obviously), had a pleasant smell and absorbed quite well. Best of all, it got the job done. But I can't shake the idea of all these toxic chemicals on my skin! I'm sure Jack Black will feel the same way!
