Jennifer Connelly Endorses Shiseido

Jennifer Connelly
Is a Solution for:
Dull Skin, Uneven Skin

Jennifer Connelly, staring in the biblical epic Noah alongside Russell Crowe, is the spokeswoman for Shiseido and, therefore, is being paid to say positive things about Shiseido Future Solutions LX Ultimate Regenerating Serum ($225). And that’s okay because, unless you were being paid to tout this, there is nothing that makes it worth writing home about — except for one single ingredient.

Shiseido’s star attraction in Future Solutions LX Ultimate Regenerating Serum is an amino acid — a synthetic amino acid to be precise. Shiseido has engineered it to inhibit production of Serpin B3. This is a new one to me and I now know that Serpin B is a protein that blocks the barrier function that protects our skin from UV light and dryness. The more Serpin B you have, the more you’ll be prone to rough skin.

At least according to Shiseido. The amino acid it has developed to fight Serpin B appears on the ingredients list of Shiseido Future Solutions LX Ultimate Regenerating Serum as piperidinepropionic acid. Serpin B seems to be associated with the programming of cell death and it seems to be well researched and documented. There isn’t information, independent of Shiseido, that confirms that an amino acid can keep this rogue protein from doing harm. And there’s nothing on piperidinepropionic acid.

Intriguing though this is, you’d have to give a leap of faith to fork out over $200 for Jennifer Connelly’s “favorite” serum. And it must be said that there’s really not much else in Shiseido Future Solutions LX Ultimate Regenerating Serum but emollients such as pentaerythrityl tetraethylhexanoate, bulking agents like fluorphlogopite and tons of acrylics.

After going through more than 40 of these things, at the very end of the formula there are some botanical antioxidants. A very sorry showing indeed. Unless Shiseido’s amino acid lives up to the hype, Future Solutions LX Ultimate Regenerating Serum is barely celebrity worthy.
