If you have a secret fantasy about smearing yourself with chocolate then you are going to really appreciate Josh Rosebrook Cacao Antioxidant Mask ($60). This luxurious, decadent chocolate rich moisturizer smells so divinely chocolatey that you will want to eat it.
I love this face mask. And not just because I am a chocoholic. There is a good anti-aging reason to reach for chocolate. It is a powerful antioxidant that scientists are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about. Polyphenols, a chemical found in chocolate, has been known to increase blood flow to the skin which can help protect against damaging UV light.
After leaving Cacao Antioxidant Mask on for 15 minutes or so and rinsing it off (which admittedly takes a bit of effort since it has a dense texture), my skin looks incredibly polished and post-vacation.
This isn’t just due to the effects of cocoa powder, but also the witch hazel, almond and grape seed oils. There is the free radical scavenger CoQ10 as well. This is another naturally occurring antioxidant that easily penetrates the skin and has been shown by research to prevent wrinkles.
Like Josh Rosebrook’s shampoo and conditioner (which I am also a fan of), Cacao Antioxidant Mask has herbal infusions. I particularly like Yerba Maté, which contains higher levels of antioxidants than both green tea and red wine; and, based on cellular studies. Scullcap is a plant whose proper name is scutellaria and it is another antioxidant. Papaya exfoliates with enzymes and the University of Maryland Medical Center endorses hawthorn berry as a free radical fighter that may protect against wrinkles.
I highly recommend getting into the holiday mood with Josh Rosebrook’s chocolate mask. And if you don’t just stick with slathering it on your face, you and your secret fantasy are safe with me.
