Josie Maran Argan Illuminizer - reviewed and recommended

December 4, 2011 Reviewed by admin 11 Comments
My current beauty goals are all working towards brighter and more radiant skin by perfecting my daily skincare routine. While my efforts have proven to steer my skin in the right direction, some days my skin will still look dull. In hopes to give my face some life in more of an instantaneous fashion, I decided to try Josie Maran's Argan Illuminizer.

Josie Maran's Cosmetics--or as they refer to it, “Luxury with a Conscience”--claims to be organic, natural, paraben-free, and made with love. Argan oil has become increasingly popular, found in skincare and cosmetic products across the board. Deriving from Argan trees found solely in Morocco, it acts as a hydrating and anti-inflammatory emollient, and serves as a powerful do-it-all skincare ingredient.

The Argan Illuminizer ($28 for 1oz) comes in a small glass bottle with a pump and lists very simple instructions. "Apply alone or mixed with foundation for an instant boost and a natural glow." I tried this product a few times before getting it right for the look I hoped to achieve.

-On bare skin with no foundation, it provided a nice luminescent glow, however, did not cover or blend well with the redness on my face.
-Mixed with foundation, it offered a nice subtle shimmer to my face, without being overwhelming. I was careful to not apply this to areas of my face that are prone to shine. I feel this method would be better suited for those who use very little foundation.
-Used over foundation (my preferred method), the Illuminizer was a great compliment to my blush, while also a sufficient replacement. Applying this to my cheekbones and the temples of my forehead and just the tiniest bit down the slope of my nose really highlighted and illuminated my skin, giving me a natural, dewy glow.

Josie Maran's Argan Illuminizer consists of many skin-conditioning oils, mainly its namesake Argan oil. Additionally, its active mineral mica is responsible for the glow you'll achieve. There are some bad guys to look out for including zinc stearate, though only a mild irritant, is far too high on the ingredient’s list. Ethylhexyl palmitate and tocopheryl acetate are some other irritants you should look out for, the latter being linked to cancer and a few cases of contact dermatitis.

When using the Argan Illuminizer, keep in mind a little goes a long way.  Though it took me a few tries to appreciate it, the Argan Illuminizer will most definitely be my go-to for instant dewy skin.

Though I've been using Josie Moran's Argan Matchmaker Powder foundation for the last couple of years and love it, I had Sephora make me a sample of this Illuminizer, and found that it did nothing at all. I couldn't see any difference on my skin.

I am much happier with the results of the Osmotics Inner Light, Instant Complexion Enhancer that we got in our last 'Discover With Marta' package.

Spo, I assure you it does give a great glow (lactic acid?). Also it's not light. In fact, I was always overusing because I imagined I needed a lot since it's in liquid form, but I would always end up looking WAY too shiny and oily. It really is fantastic stuff and I wanted to share with the TIA community. I'm nervously awaiting Marta's review.

Thanks oksana for the ingredients list...

I don't really see how this is going to give a great glow.. Looks like some light moisture and a 2 antioxidants - nothing bad, just nothing so special..

Thanks, Spo! Do let us know what you think. The Illuminizer has been making a huge difference to my makeup routine. I am now also applying it on my brow bone as a highlighter of sorts. Looks great!

Chris, that's good to hear! I am also considering trying other parts of the JM collection.

Spo, I'm not sure. I've used it before, but don't remember the ingredients, but according to their website it is all natural and contains "No alcohol, no oils, no fats, no preservatives or parabens used"

It's been a while since I used it only because I always forget about it! going to order again in a few weeks.

Marta, I am totally looking forward to your take on it!

Another great review, Preksha - thank you!
I just ordered the Argan Illuminizer and will try it..

I'm intrigued by the skin-lasting, so I went to the web address, but I don't see any ingredient listing for the product. Does anyone know what's in the stuff?

I've been using Josie Maran sunscreen and foundation for more than a year, and I get compliments on my skin that I never got before. I'll definitely try the Illuminizer.
