Jurlique’s Biodynamic Beauty: How do I love thee?

Is a Solution for:
Dry Skin, Oily Skin

Let me count the ways…

Founded in 1983 by Dr. Jurgen Klein, a biochemist and naturopath, and his wife Ulrike, a botanist and horticulturalist, the Australian organic and biodynamic skin care company Jurlique has been the country’s number one number one skin care line for nearly twenty-four years now. Responsible for such celebrity complexions as Nicole Kidmen and Cate Blanchett, it is, simply, “the alternative beauty care company that believes beauty comes from beauty.”

Rather than focus on the power of chemicals to deliver results, the Jurlique modus operandi maintains that the elemental living energy found in the carefully sourced plants that make it into Jurlique products makes it that much more concentrated, potent and eventually effective then the chem.-filled competitors.

And everything about Jurlique is truly beautiful. From the gorgeous packaging (on 80% post-consumer recycled fiber) to the elegant white bottles and apothecary-like tubes to the scent, smell and feel and finally to the results seen in the mirror after just one week, everything has been quite wonderful.

Just last Friday, after only a mere four days of use, my dear friend of over twelve years remarked that I looked simply radiant. And while having a skype video chat with my Australian ex-boyfriend (whom I haven’t seen in person in nearly twenty months), he commented that I was looking “really young…younger than even from when I first met you” four years ago. Indeed, even Marta commented on my dewy complexion today at work, impressed that my skin is looking so good without makeup.

Here’s what I’ve been using:

The Balancing Cleansing Lotion ($48, 6.7 fl. oz.)
The Biodynamic Beauty Refining Treatment ($35, 1.4 fl. oz.)
The Biodynamic Beauty Serum ($75, 1 fl. oz.)
The Herbal Recovery Neck Serum ($80, 1 fl. oz.)
The Biodynamic Beauty Eye Cream ($45, 0.5 fl. oz.)
The Balancing Day Care Cream ($40-$78, 1.4 fl. oz. - 4.3 fl. oz.)
The Biodynamic Beauty Night Lotion ($55, 1.4 fl. oz.)

At the heart of my new regimen is the Jurlique Biodynamic Beauty Range—their first ever exclusively anti-aging collection—that includes a serum, eye cream, night lotion and refining treatment to support graceful aging and skin renewal. I’ve been supplementing this line with their balancing cleansing cream, day care cream and herbal recovery neck serum. All products in the Jurlique range are completely organic, grown on certified biodynamic and organic farms in South Australia and do not contain parabens, mineral oils, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, synthetic emulsifiers, artificial colors or fragrances.

What the line does contain is a proprietary blend of herbs and flowers--the "biodynamic blend"--combined with potent naturally derived ingredients that make reading the back of the bottle truly a riveting experience. Have you ever known people who claim to read cook books like novels? That devour gourmet foodie magazines with rapturous glee?.. They are those who roll over recipes with their mind's tongue, tasting each concoction fully without ever having to sully the kitchen.

I found that reading over the Jurlique ingredient list to be quite similar. Licorice root, black elder, chamomile, pansy and violet are the core, active ingredients in the biodynamic beauty blend. Tested and proved to get equal and/or better results than other mainstream, traditional competitors (at least according to internal studies), this blend has been designed to soften the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and discolorations all the while helping to renew and strengthen the skin. And all I can say about this is that I'm definitely sold! Never in my life has my skin felt so... so... alive. Really, it's extraordinary--there really must be something, some kind of hidden hocus pocus that is found within this line.

Breaking it down a bit:

The antioxidant Black Elder Flower (sambucus nigra) extract helps reduce irritation and soften and lighten the skin, resulting in a brighter complexion

Hydrating and calming Chamomile (chamomilla recutita) extract rebalances dryness and soothes the skin with its anti-redness, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, and has been used in traditional medicine to treat eczema and other types of skin irritation.

Licorice Root (glycyrrhiza glabra) extract works the same way, offering excellent hydrating properties to help rebalance dryness and enhance skin brightness and overall radiance. It's an anti-inflammatory with powerful skin lightening properties.

Derived from the pansy flower, Pansy (viola tricolor) extract, with its anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and wound-healing properties, is also used for its calming and soothing abilities. In addition, it also works to encourage healthy skin function by improving the skin's elimination process.

Harvested from Jurlique's Heirloom rose gardens, Rose Flower (rosa gallica) extract contains tannins, which have a strong toning effect, along with many other compounds beneficial to the skin that are used here to soften, balance and restore.

Sweet Violet (viola odorata) extract is particularly wonderful to sensitive skin, cleansing, moisturizing and rebalancing without irritation.

Now, in case you are wondering what biodynamic means (I know I was), let me tell you a little about a particularly interesting process that sprang from the founders commitment to a "natural, plant-based alternative using a combination of age-old therapies."

Biodynamicism à la Jurlique means that all ingredients have been grown on the company’s own hand-tended, hand-harvested farms, which have been sustained, harvested and irrigated according to the cycles of the moon without pesticides or herbicides. On top of that, Jurlique uses companion planting methods (i.e. the scientifically confirmed method where certain plant combinations bring out unique benefits in each other) and ancient crop rotation practices to ensure that each ingredient makes its way to your skin in peak form.

"We believe that source is our most important value," says CEO Eli Halliwell who expands further in the video below. So important, and so much apart of the Jurlique brand that the company is sponsoring a contest to win a trip to Jurlique’s "source of renewal"--their certified organic and biodynamic farms in South Australia.

So far, Jurlique has been the most pleasant of discoveries and a brand that I heartily recommend. Take a few minutes to watch the video below, and I'm sure you'll be impressed.

Yeah... Sounds almost heavenly for body. I've looked up their ingredients list and my impressions went down much. Besides those flowers and nature's beauties they use harsh chemicals, like Phenoxyethanol, for instance, that what fully discussed on this website (link below). So, be careful.

Hi Jill, you are right! The prices have been corrected. Apparently I copied the first price for all the products, and forgot to change the numbers afterward. My oversight. Thanks for drawing attention to this.

Where did you get your products from? The prices on the Jurlique web site are about double the prices listed on your post. Thanks!

Hi Claire, thanks so much for letting me know your thoughts! If you could let me know how your roommates fare with the wrinkle relax cream, that would be wonderful. Much appreciated!

Hey Beth, that's a good question.

To be honest, I haven't started to wrinkle--yet--on my face, so I can't attest to that (I'll be turning 27 in September.) But I have noticed a particularly disturbing crease in my cleavage that's been giving me much grief.

What I can say about that is this: I've been using Jurlique's face and neck serum on my décolleté, along with their soothing calendula cream and wrinkle relaxing cream, and I've definitely been noticing some changes. Today, for example, when looking down at my sports bra-stuffed chest (which usually brings out the unfortunate crinkle) the lines were barely noticeable.) And, I must admit that I haven't been particularly zealous with the stuff, applying it maybe two, three times a week.

What I can say about the rest of the Jurlique products and their effects on my face is that they've been wonderful for improving the clarity, tone, texture and overall feel. At this point in my life when it comes to anti-aging, prevention and protection are key. And because Jurlique has done so much for my skin as it is in its 27-years-old state, I'm a definite believer that it would equally impart the same benefits (anti-aging or whatelse) to your skin, no matter where it falls on the aging range.

Both of my roommates (aged 30, and 33, with their fair share of wrinkles) have started just recently using the wrinkle relax cream. So I will let you know their results as soon as they give them to me.

Thanks for the comment, and let me know if you have any more questions!

This sounds like the perfect product. However, I'm concerned that it may not improve my existing wrinkles. Have you seen a noticeable wrinkle reduction or just an overall brightening and smoothing of the skin?

I agree with you--Jurlique is truly extraordinary. I'm not sure how they make it work, but it certainly does work brilliantly.
