Kahina Antioxidant Mask- reviewed and recommended

March 29, 2012 Reviewed by Marta 0 Comments

Kahina Antioxidant Mask ($62) leaves my face looking refreshed and glowing, as if it had just had been given a healthy meal. And because its exfoliating effects are really very gentle, I am able to use this mask multiple times a week. I don’t see this as a quick fix, but more an anti-aging treatment that gives benefits over time.

As you would expect, it has Kahina’s signature argan oil, which is rich in fatty acids and good for skin , hair and nails (I dab a little of Kahina’s Serum on my fingernails and they grow like crazy).  I credit a lot of this mask’s success to aspen (populus tremuloides).  For centuries, Native American Indians have used Aspen tree bark for various medicinal purposes, from treating burns to reducing fevers to relieving eczema. The bark is rich in salycin, an aspirin-like substance, which is considered to be analgesic, anti-inflammatory, calming, and healing. It is a natural preservative and has the added bonus of imparting a silky and smooth feeling to skin.

The antioxidants are provided by rosemary, another favorite of Kahina’s. Carnosic acid and carnosol have been suggested to account for over 90% of the antioxidant properties of rosemary extract and are also powerful inhibitors of lipid peroxidation. There’s also acai and pomegranate.

I like that Kahina always fesses up as to precisely how organic its products are (59% in this case). The product is almost entirely natural including the non-irritating and gentle preservative totarol, which comes from the totara trees of New Zealand, which are known to grow for over 1,000 years. The only not to like is benzyl alcohol, which has low molecular weight and may be drying and irritating.

Kahina’s mask is a good product for almost all age groups: It is ideal for 30-somethings looking to start with a good antioxidant and brightening product, and has enough moisturizing from the various oils to help through the decades to 60s, 70s and beyond.
