Earlier this year Kaplan MD launched four new collections of skincare products created by clinical and cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Stuart Kaplan, MD, including a Luxury Concentrate Collection. This particular collection contains his new Intensive Eye Concentrate ($135/0.5oz).

I’m not a newcomer to Dr. Kaplan’s skincare products, as I’ve used his Intensive Eye Cream for the past couple of years as my go-to eye product with very good results. It actually became a staple after I tested and found it to do a really good job of hydrating, firming and improving fine lines.

How could this new formula improve upon the old? While the old formula had a smattering of plant extracts, the new Eye Concentrate goes far beyond with a lengthy roll call of around 30 botanicals contributing varied properties. The ingredients heal, reduce inflammation, moisturize, soften, tone, and serve as an emollient and antioxidant, to name a few. The new Kaplan Eye Concentrate lists its key ingredients as: 22 USDA certified organic extracts, BioFusion-3S, Juvinity, Matrixyl Synth’6, soy, Hyasomes, Glycosaminoglycans, Algisium C, Haloxyl, avocado oil, vitamin E, and Hawaiian sea extracts. According to Dr. Kaplan, this formulation is intended “to treat multiple causes of skin aging including chronologic aging, environmental damage and natural hormonal progression.”

Already familiar with the old formula, I decided on a side-by-side comparison to measure it with the performance of the Intensive Eye Concentrate. (I applied one to each upper / lower eye area, a.m. and p.m. for five weeks. Only a small amount is needed and based on my use, I estimate the container to last about six to seven weeks.)

First, there are similarities – both are unscented and lightweight creams that applied easily (lightly tapping the product around the eye area) and were quickly absorbed. Neither left any residue or tackiness and neither caused any breakouts. Closely watching both sides, the first difference I noticed was apparent at the end of the second day. The new concentrate side stayed a bit more hydrated and actually felt lightly moisturized to the touch throughout the day. At the start of the fourth week this same side also showed a slight improvement in a couple of very fine lines. Now, these were subtle changes most likely more noticeable to me than others, so I can’t say I saw a drastic difference. However, it was the previous formula that got me to where I am now by firming, improving elasticity and skin tone, and diminishing fine lines. The Intensive Eye Concentrate continued doing all of this with the couple of improvements noted above, so this product performed well. I think it would be suitable for most everyone, especially those needing a bit more moisture around the eye area.
