KaplanMD Lip 20 Gloss Antiaging Treatment + SPF

Reviewed by Marta October 12, 2010 9 Comments
In my experience, multitasking products are barely Jacks of all trades and rarely masters of any. One of the few exceptions is KaplanMD’s  Lip 20 Treatment, a lip plumper (that actually plumps), antiager and sunscreen all in one. Now they have upped the ante even more by bringing out Lip 20 Gloss, it moisturizes, repairs, protects and plumps pretty much as Lip 20 Treatment does, but with SHIMMER.

The capital letters are because these lip glosses have seasonal shine and glitter (there are flecks of gold mingling with the tints).  Lip 20 Gloss Antiaging Treatment + SPF ($30 in the TIA shop) come in a clear,  natural (pale pink), nude (light bronze), berry and ruby. All with SPARKLE.  With these you know it’s holiday season. But being KaplanMD products, these glosses are not all about party time; they  most certainly have their serious side.

As with Lip 20 Treatment, the plumping job is achieved by sodium hyaluronate in the form of patented molecules that easily penetrate the skin. Hyaluronate’s moisturizing power is backed up by shea butter and squalane. Another important ingredient is seabuckthorn (hippophae rhamnoides), which has loads of quercetin. The thing about quercetin is that it may be a much more of a powerful antioxidant than was previously thought. Cornell University has a new way of measuring antioxidant potency called ‘cellular antioxidant activity’ (CAA) that tests the antioxidant activities of a compound inside the cell itself. This is an approach that is deemed to be more accurate. Of all the flavenoids, quercetin had the highest CAA value.

One of Kaplan MD’s signature ingredients is black cohosh root extract. This is a source of plant-derived estrogen and is used as antiaging ingredient.

As far as the SPF goes, there is octisalate, which seems to be perfectly safe, while the other two can be unstable and octonixate should, perhaps, be avoided by pregnant women (the estrogen issue again). You can read about octinoxate and the other two sunscreen actives in our article that summarizes some of the research.

PS: We also have very cute packs of five mini glosses - one in each color - perfect for the holidays and very giftable ($48 in the TIA shop)

    These are wonderful glosses.
They feel so smooth and are very sheen in color.
They got it right in making theses.
They are now a new favorite of mine.
Super fast shipping, Marta. Thank you!
I am so glad that I went ahead and ordered them.
They are small enough to carry on me.
I am also glad I bought them set!

I always had full lips, but now that I'm 41 they're a little less full and need some plumping. Not to mention I love lip gloss, my lips a perpetually dry in the winter.I'm very picky about my lip glosses and have tried many and threw out many. I'm always looking for the perfect trifecta: texture, smell, and ingredients. Would love to try the Kaplan MD glosses. I love the colors!

A plumper with SPF 20, too! Wow, my interest is piqued. Would love to try Kaplan MD products.

I would love to try a plumper that works without the irritation of most I've tried.

I just ordered my second tube of Kaplan MD Lip 20 treatment as I so enjoyed my first. I keep it in my car and it is the first thing I do when I get in. It moisturizes so well and makes your lip supple with a hint of color. I am SO excited that they have come out with a shimmer gloss because I hate wearing anything else now. Would love to give it a test drive with the holidays approaching when my pucker has to be dressed up a bit more.

I love the Kaplan MD products and was thrilled to find out that they are coming out with glosses! I've been waiting to buy them, as I am a lipgloss junky who would love to find a new favorite like I did with the LIP 20 treatment. I will never use anything else!

I would love to try these on my 48 year old lips. My lips stay dry and chapped and I always all my life I have kept something on them. I would say my lips are somewhat full and the best feature on my face, but who doesn't want more? These sound great for aged lips and I would love to compare them to the Buxom glosses I just ordered.
