I like Lip Savvy’s back story: singer Deidra Whatley was always in search of the perfect product and when her makeup bags started to weigh as much as her instruments she decided to take matters into her own hands. Her mission is to create anti-aging multitaskers and Lip Savvy ($18) is an antioxidant and peptide infused lip gloss and plumper.

I have to say that Ms Whatley has gathered some impressive ingredients for her lip gloss. Even the lip plumping takes a new approach (at least I haven’t come across this before) that also doubles as an anti-aging active. Called Hilurlip, it uses sodium hyaluronate in a clever way, first reducing the particle size to enhance penetration and then they swell when they are in contact with skin water, hence plumping the lips. The Hilurlip formula also contains tripeptide 1, which is said to prevent glycation and thereby prevent the loss of collagen.

Having tried out Lip Savvy, I would say that it does give a short-term plumping effect. This lip gloss also stays put for a while and, although I do find it annoyingly tacky, I do like the slight taste of macaroons. By the way, I've been testing Sho Bunny, which is nude (if not clear).

Hilurlip™ also contains the tripeptide GHK, a well-known RCS scavenger, which protects the lips against the harmful effects of sun exposure. GHK is able to inhibit glycation therefore preventing the loss of collagen elasticity, and to protect skin cells from photodamage.

The only other lip product that I know of with Lipochroman 6 (Dimethylmethoxy Chromanol) is Quench by Your Best Face, so I was impressed to find it in a lip gloss. It is a powerful radical scavenger, supposedly more so than even resveratrol.

Then there’s also something called Maxi-Lip Ethylhexyl palmitate (and) the skin conditioning agent with fatty acids that is found in plants called tribehenin and one of the peptides that goes into Matrixyl 3000 (Maxi-Lip is made by the same company) palmitoyl oligopeptide.

I was bracing myself for some disappointing chemicals, but this formula isn’t too bad at all. Even the scary looking dipentaerythrityl hexahydroxystearate looks to be a fairly harmless thickener based on caprylic acids. The dominant ingredient polyglyceryl-6 dioleate is typically combined with cottonseed oil (as it is here) as an alternative to lanolin. I should point out that there are a couple things in Lip Savvy that I don’t like : dimethicone is a silicone and there seems to be evidence that silicone if ingested (and given that this is a lip gloss, some of it will) is a toxin, as is  phenoxyethanol, plus there is BHT, a carcinogen.

I think its great that a chanteuse has come up some cutting edge anti-aging ingredients for a lip gloss that still retains a sexy rock chick vibe. Now if Diedra Whatley could clean out some of the above mentioned ingredients, we’d be singing from the same hymn sheet.
