I was very excited to try the Hydrating Gel Mask ($47) from Living Nature. It’s a lightweight product that lasts since a little goes a long way. Note that if you apply too much, it feels slimy on the skin and takes slightly longer to dry.

I received the Hydrating Gel Mask the day that Hurricane Sandy hit New York City (my home lost power and heat for a week), and it was just what I needed to bring my face back to normal. Usually, my skin type is normal (not too dry, not too oily) but after stressing out and being forced to wash my face with cold water, it became extremely dry. I even started to slightly break out! This product did a great job at hydrating my skin.

The primary ingredient in this mask is manuka honey from New Zealand. It is known for nourishing, rejuvenating and healing dry and sensitive skin. The Hydrating Gel Mask also uses flax gel as a hydrator, which cools the skin upon application.

As soon as I got my hot water and power back, I used the mask and immediately noticed a change in my skin. The breakouts subsided, and my skin was no longer dry — it was smooth, supple and felt great.

While this product has its very good points, there is one bad point that I simply cannot get past… the smell. It has a fecal/dirt odor to it that doesn’t fade after application — it comes off after the product is rinsed off — but I just couldn’t get used to it. This is an unfragranced product that I would recommend adding a fragrance to, to mask that smell.

Overall, if you love natural products and don’t mind the smell, this product is for you. If you’re like me, and know you won’t get used to the smell, then this product is not for you.

Ingredients: Aqua (water), Mel (manuka honey), Glycerin (vegetable glycerin), Sclerotium gum, Daucus carota (carrot) extract, Citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract, Phormium tenax leaf juice (NZ flax gel), Xanthan gum, Hypericum perforatum (st John’s wort) oil, Triticum vulgare (wheat) germ oil, Calendula officinalis (calendula) extract**, Citrus aurantium (orange) oil, Pogostemon cablin (patchouli) oil, Cistus ladaniferus (cistus) oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Leptospermum scoparium (manuka) oil, Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, Limonene*
