L'uvalla Age-Defying Day Night Cream and Eye Lip Anti-Wrinkle Cream have a lot to love

Dark Circles, Sagging Skin

A tip from a reader led me down the fragrant plant-lined path to L'uvalla. Certified organic, L'uvalla's skincare products are not only formulated with vegan ingredients straight from nature, but they are also sustainably produced, from seed to shelf. Two exotic anti-agers, lotus flower extract and argan oil, are L'uvalla's signature ingredients. While the lotus flower lends the skin potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory powers, argan oil nourishes with fatty acids and vitamin E (twice the amount of olive oil). I got to know L'uvalla better by testing two creams designed to turn back the clock: the Age-Defying Day/Night Cream and the Eye/Lip Anti-Wrinkle Cream.

L'uvalla is very upfront about the origin of its formulas. While 100% of the ingredients derive from a natural source, 95% of the plant ingredients in the Day/Night Cream (and 99% in the Eye/Lip Cream) come from organic agriculture. On top of the fatty acids in the argan oil, L'uvalla loads up both formulas with hazel seed oil, palm kernel oil, and sunflower seed oil. These natural emollients serve to deeply condition the skin, along with wheat germ oil, which is rich in nearly every vitamin under the sun, essential fatty acids, and minerals. The remainder of the botanical oils in both creams contribute some arguable antiseptic and cell-stimulating benefits to the skin. They are most often used for their mood-lifting aromatic properties.

Typically, I'm not a sucker for aromatherapy, though I'll admit I was once seduced by a tantalizing bouquet of REN Rose Synergy Facial Serum. But L'uvalla's creams emit a subtle, earthy fragrance that seems to put mind at ease.  The Age-Defying Cream uses rosewood oil for its calming properties, rose geranium flower oil for its anti-depressant effects, and thyme oil for its ability to combat exhaustion and aid in concentration. The Eye/Lip Cream draws on cypress oil and ylang ylang flower oil (the key aphrodisiac component of pherAdore). These essential oils are known to melt away anxiety, anger, and tension. I doubt it's a coincidence that I fall asleep much more easily when my face is coated in L'uvalla's twin creams.

I was initially disappointed at the diminutive sizes of the Age-Defying Day/Night Cream (1.4 oz.) and the  Eye/Lip Anti-Wrinkle Cream (0.7 oz.), but these moisturizers are made to last a full three months. Just a small squirt of each product goes the distance. Thanks to cilica (a mineral used as an absorbent powder and thickening agent) in the Day/Night Cream, the emollient spreads easily across the skin without leaving a greasy residue. As it gets absorbed almost instantly, it smooths out texture, mattifies oily areas, and thoroughly hydrates dry spots. It may sound cliche, but my face has developed a healthy, youthful glow under the influence of this cream. I cannot detect a single weakness, save for its lack of SPF during daytime use.

I am almost as enamored with the Anti-Wrinkle Eye/Lip Cream, which gives an uplifting boost of moisture to the eye area. My sporadic dark circles remain, but fine lines have seemed to fade. As for its other use, though the cream doesn't have a noticeable smoothing effect on my lip creases, it has won over my senses with the smell of an herb garden and the feel of luxurious silk. Because of its lightweight texture, a little goes a very long way in coating my pout. It may not last for hours like a wax-based balm, but how often can you use the same cream both under your eyes and on your lips? I am familiar with very few moisturizers that I'd feel safe ingesting, and L'uvalla makes one of them.

Like an innocent puppy, L'uvalla's two moisturizers are hard not to love. The only dangers in the Age-Defying Cream are citric acid, lavendin oil, and castor seed oil, all of which can cause mild skin irritation after repeated exposure. L'uvalla omitted castor seed oil from the Eye/Lip Cream, probably due to convincing evidence of both skin and eye irritation at low doses. Extremely sensitive skin may experience allergies to a few botanical oils in the latter formula (i.e. lavender, ylang-ylang), but most skin types should experience nothing but nourishment. All of the common toxic offenders, including parabens, phenoxyethanol, PEGs, DEAs, propylene glycol, active chemicals, and synthetic fillers are conspicuously MIA.

I would love love to try these. I am obsessed with my skincare regime right now. My marionette lines are driving me crazy! I am allergic to so many ingredients it's mot funny. Steric Acid being one and it's in everything!

Hi Copley, I'm so glad that you reviewed L'uvalla. I’m actually a friend of Susan’s who commented on your Organic Apoteke farewell Letter (I turned her into a L’uvalla Fan). I'm 53, and have been suffering from fine lines (I guess I have to come to grips with it and call them wrinkles), very dry skin and rosacea. I've been using the age defying system for about a year and my skin looks better now than it did for a very long time. I'm so excited that more people are finding out about this amazing company. By the way, after using the products for 5 weeks my rosacea went away completely :) My wrinkles also diminished substantially. I thank you for writing such a thorough review and explaining why the products work based on the ingredients. Please continue to write wonderful reviews that inform your reader, and please keep us informed if you try any new L’uvalla products in the future. ~ Nancy

    Hi Copley,

Thanks for your review. I've been in the market for a new skin care system for a while. I had been using Jurlique for years but I started to be more concerned about my carbon footprint so I wanted to use a line that was made in North America (I'm in NYC). I tried Dr. Alkaitis and I so wanted to love it, but I don't.

My biggest concern is my neck (I have the beginning stages of turkey neck - aaackkkk!) as well as the skin around my eyes. Everything I've tried is either too greasy or not nourishing enough. So my search for an organic skin care company continues and I'm now itching to try L'Uvalla.
